Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has signed a new law increasing penalties for ma*****na use near schools and college campuses.

Smoking within 2,000 feet of these areas was already illegal, but violators can now face up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Supporters say the law will help keep campuses more family-friendly, while critics argue it creates a double standard and could be difficult to enforce.

After Theatre Baton Rouge closed before the end of its 79th season, Mid City Civic Theatre is stepping into the historic space with a new mission.

Led by LSU associate professor Shannon Walsh, the organization plans to bring back productions, expand acting classes and host community events. The inaugural season opens June 11 with Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.”

LSU announced Wednesday that Joseph Messina has been selected as its next senior vice chancellor and provost following a months-long national search.

Pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors, Messina will begin the role Aug. 3, 2026, and serve as the university’s chief academic officer.
