Yeah… That’s what you train on…

Every dump you just watched came out of mats that get sprayed down after every single class. Mats that smell fine. Mats that look clean under the lights. Mats that you’ve pressed your face into a thousand times without thinking twice.

That water isn’t from shoes tracking in dirt.

That’s sweat from hundreds or even thousands of rounds soaked into the mats over months. Dead skin cells. Body oil. Hair. The byproduct of every scramble, every pass, every time someone’s face hit the mat. It builds up layer by layer because spraying only handles what’s sitting on the surface. It doesn’t reach what’s been embedding itself underneath since the last time anyone actually deep cleaned the thing…. or if it’s ever been deep cleaned at all 😖

And here’s what lives in there once it does:

Staph. Ringworm. MRSA. Pseudomonas. None of it is visible. None of it announces itself until it’s already a problem. A cut on your knee. A spot on your arm you didn’t notice until it was the size of a quarter. Those little scrapes you get on the tops of your toes. A gym trip that turned into a doctor’s visit.

Your personal hygiene still matters. Shower after practice. Wash your gear after every session. Don’t roll with open skin. All of that counts and none of that changes.

But you can do everything right and still catch something from a mat that hasn’t been deep scrubbed in six months. Because the mat is the foundation. If it’s carrying it, it doesn’t matter how clean you are when you walk in.

Quarterly, minimum. That’s what it takes to actually pull this stuff out.

Next time you shoot a takedown and your face drags across the mat, remember what you just watched.

Shoutout to Edge 2 Edge Mat Care for coming back as an Official “Of The Night” Sponsor for GSF 4.🔥

They supported our last event, and we’re excited to have them back helping us continue to grow the show and the Louisiana grappling community.

Clean mats matter. Professionalism matters. The details matter. Edge 2 Edge has continued to support local martial arts and combat sports, and we’re grateful to have businesses like them backing what we’re building. 🤝

Make sure to go give them a follow and show them some love.

Spraying between classes handles the surface.

That's it. That's the whole job.

It knocks down what's sitting on top, keeps the smell manageable, makes the mat look clean to anyone walking in.

It does not touch what's embedded underneath. The sweat, the skin cells, the body oil, the bacteria that have been pressing into the mat foam under the weight of training bodies for months.

You can spray a mat every single day for a year and never touch what's actually in there.

I'm not saying don't spray. Spray. It's part of maintenance.

I'm saying maintenance and cleaning are not the same thing. Same way brushing your teeth and going to the dentist are not the same thing.

Both matter. One goes deeper.

Nobody files a complaint about ringworm.

They don't leave a Google review.

They don't send you a DM.

They just stop showing up. And three weeks later you're looking at your member numbers trying to figure out what happened.

I've been around the block enough to know this is a thing.

A hygiene concern spreads through a training community like a bad whisper ... someone mentions it to their training partner, who mentions it to their training partner, who stops coming too.

By the time you feel it in your numbers, it's been building for a bit too long.

You never see it coming because the feedback never arrived.

We stop all that dead in it's tracks.

There is a gap between what you believe about your mats and what is actually true.

Not because you don't care. You do. Every gym owner I have walked into cares about their members.

The gap is information. What spraying actually handles. What it doesn't touch. What builds up underneath over weeks of classes.

That gap is the only reason Edge2Edge exists.
