I know creating elevated color palettes for your design can feel hard- especially if you're growing your own flowers and you're trying to figure out what goes with what and what customers will pay for.
I have a simple framework that will take the guesswork out of creating color palettes.
Check out my new YouTube video where I explain the very simple process of creating fancy color palettes even if you feel like you know nothing about color.

I think people sometimes imagine floral design as this magical, artistic process where inspiration just strikes and everything falls into place.
The truth? It's creative... but it's also incredibly practical.
In this centerpiece, I'm thinking about mechanics, flower recipes, stem counts, proportions, hydration, and how to get the most value from every single stem. Every cut has a purpose.
That's the part of floral design I love most—the balance between art and problem-solving.
If you've ever wondered what actually goes into creating wedding centerpieces (beyond just "putting flowers in a vase"), I walk you through the entire process in my newest YouTube video.

Here's a fun floral design question:
Is an echinacea a focal flower or a secondary focal flower?
The answer is...
It depends. 😄
If you're designing with peonies, the echinacea is probably a secondary focal.
If you're designing with smaller flowers like bachelors buttons or scabiosa, the echinacea might become the focal.
That's why I call secondary focal flowers shape shifters. Their role changes depending on the flowers around them.
Instead of labeling flowers permanently, try assigning them a job before you start designing.
I share exactly how I make that decision in my newest YouTube video. Come watch!

Filler flowers don't get nearly enough credit.
Everyone notices the focal flowers, but filler flowers are often the stems doing the heavy lifting. They connect the design, add movement, soften transitions, create texture, and help arrangements feel lush and complete.
And there are SO many good ones.
I've put together my full list of favorite filler flowers—from classics I use all the time to a few that deserve way more attention than they get.

Not every flower in an arrangement gets to be the main character.
Some flowers are supporting actors.
Some are background extras.
And then there are focal flowers.
The peonies.
The roses.
The dahlias.
The giant show-offs that make people stop and say, "Wow."
The rest of the arrangement exists to help them look their best.
Once you understand that, floral design starts making a whole lot more sense.
