What should you do with an old 401(k), 403(b), or Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) after leaving a job? In many cases, you have four options:

📌 Leave your retirement account where it is. This is simple and maintains its tax-advantaged status. Just be sure you understand how to access and manage your retirement account.

🔁 Roll over your old retirement account into your new workplace retirement account. It maintains your account's tax advantages and can be easier to manage. To do this, your current workplace retirement account must accept rollovers. It could require a waiting period. If you have Roth assets, check that your new workplace retirement account accepts them.

🔁 Roll over your old retirement account into a Traditional and/or Roth IRA. This move also preserves tax-advantaged status for your retirement savings and may give you more investment options than a workplace retirement fund.

💵 Cash out your old retirement account. You should know that cashing out a retirement account, especially before age 59½, can cause you to owe taxes and/or penalties. While there are a few important exceptions to this, consider consulting a tax professional before taking this step.

👉 Before you take any action on an old retirement account, compare your investment options and be sure you understand any required minimum balances and fees.

Don’t wait for the “right time” to invest. Here’s what to know: Instead of watching the markets, decide on a set of goals for your investing and a timeline for reaching them. These two things are the foundation for any solid investing strategy. Staying invested over the long term can help you manage market ups and downs — so you can feel confidence in your strategy and in reaching your goals.

Here’s the truth: Financial independence isn’t one thing. It’s as flexible as you are. Start by defining financial independence for yourself — something like paying off debt, replacing your income or saving a specific amount. Once you decide what financial independence means to you, you can start creating goals and strategies based on that objective.

Where you’ll live — and what you’ll need — are two of the biggest questions in the second half of retirement. The earlier you or a loved one start exploring the costs and options, the less you’ll be under pressure to decide.
