📢 Join Us During Civil Rights Week: Know Your Rights – Navigating the School System as a Parent
As a parent, knowing your rights is one of the most powerful tools you have to advocate for your child's education. But navigating the school system can be challenging, especially when you're trying to ensure your child receives the support, services, and opportunities they deserve.
I'm excited to join an incredible panel of education leaders, advocates, and community representatives for "Know Your Rights: Navigating the School System as a Parent" during Baltimore City's Civil Rights Week.
We'll discuss critical topics, including:
🔹 Understanding your rights as a parent within the school system
🔹 Navigating special education, IEPs, and 504 plans
🔹 Advocating for students who are struggling academically
🔹 Addressing barriers to educational access and equity
🔹 Building meaningful partnerships with schools and strengthening parent voices
As a Parent Advocate, I'm especially looking forward to discussing how parents can effectively advocate for their children when they need additional academic support, accommodations, or specialized instruction. Every parent deserves to understand their rights and feel empowered to participate in decisions that affect their child's educational journey.

What does it take for a nation to decide that its children will read?
Clarice has spent more than two decades living with that question. She has watched children struggle without the instruction they needed, listened to families fight to be heard, and seen what happens when someone finally teaches a child in a way that works. Now she has written her first book about the question beneath all of it.
Literacy as Exodus: The Blueprint for Reclaiming Educational Will, will be released December 8, 2026.
This book brings together personal narrative, faith, history, and the science of reading. It examines how we came to accept educational failure despite knowing more than ever about how children learn, and what it will take to reclaim the will to teach them well. It is written for parents and educators, but also for anyone who cares about the kind of future we are building.
She chose December 8 with intention. On that date in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. That moment speaks to one part of the book’s historical argument: rebuilding requires more than a declaration. It requires the will to make freedom and opportunity real, including through education.
The prelaunch list is now open at ClariceJackson.com. Sign up to learn more about the book and receive updates as we approach its release. Copies are not available to purchase or reserve yet.

This right here is why we (Amanda Harrison and Sherri M Lucas) do the work.
We received this message from a parent in our program, and it stopped us in our tracks. Just months ago, this student was struggling—and now? He’s making measurable reading gains, building confidence, and even reading and presenting in front of his class.
- That doesn’t just happen.
- That takes support.
- That takes access.
- That takes someone believing it’s possible.
Through our partnership with Toe By Toe - for struggling readers we launched a pilot program that ran for a little over a year to support parents who are tutoring their children at home using the Toe by Toe manual.
And we made a commitment: ZERO cost to families.
-Because too many parents are locked out of resources their children desperately need.
-Because too many children are labeled instead of taught.
-Because literacy changes everything.
But here’s the truth—we cannot continue or expand this work without support.
We are asking you to be part of this impact.
-Every dollar helps a child learn to read.
-Every donation puts tools directly into a parent’s hands.
-Every contribution changes a child’s future.
If this story moved you, don’t scroll past it.
Give what you can. Share if you can. Stand with us.
Because when we say “So All Can Read,” we mean ALL.

Four years ago, we stepped out believing that there needed to be a national space where Black literacy was not a side conversation, an afterthought, or simply another statistic—but the CENTER of the conversation.
And look at what God has done.
In 2027, we are coming together again—educators, researchers, parents, advocates, literacy leaders, policymakers, clinicians, faith leaders, community leaders, and people from across the country and beyond—to ask a different question:
**What worked before, and what will it take to build it again?**
This is **THE BLUEPRINT.**
We are bringing history, research, evidence, instruction, language, community, faith, advocacy, policy, dyslexia, structured literacy, and the lived experiences of Black children and families into the same building.
