Relationships. Woven Strong.® At the heart of our community are young people, exceptional individuals in extraordinary situations.

Thread makes a ten-year commitment to them, beginning in 9th grade. Our young people are paired with family member volunteers who commit for one year and work together as a team to support them as they work towards self-sufficiency. Everyone in Thread has a coach who consistently “has your back,” and supports your personal journey. We know that enduring, authentic relationships change lives. Together, we are weaving The New Social Fabric ®.

Thread hosted our first-ever Adulting Bootcamp! Young people attended four sessions, taught by volunteers and Thread staff, about "adult" skills we all wish we knew sooner, like:

• Budgeting and Saving💸
• Mindfulness and Cognitive Distortions 🧘
• How to Create a Signature and Why It Matters ✔️
• Time Management ⏲️
• ER vs. Hospital and Accessing MyChart 🏥
• Creating LinkedIn Profiles 🔗
• Car Accident Preparedness 🚗
• Grocery Shopping on a Budget 🛍️

What's a skill you wish you'd known before becoming an adult?

Thread Family Courtney and Leslie met up for the first time, after texting consistently over winter. They had dinner in Fells Point before taking a boat ride from Fells to Locust Point, and back! This is why volunteer consistency is key to creating lasting relationships with young people.

We’re honored to be featured by former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who highlights the power of Thread’s 10-year promise to Baltimore youth. In a world that can feel more disconnected than ever, we believe in showing up—again and again—for one another. Dr. Murthy’s words remind us: “Our relationships are our anchors.” Read his reflections on the impact of long-term commitment and the strength of community.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Teachers are essential partners in the work we do to support young people through graduation and beyond. We've been appreciating teachers and staff at our seven school sites all week, with breakfast and lunch served by our site-based teams.
