🎨We’ve been amazed to watch over the past year how Empact Art has brought together hundreds and hundreds of Baltimoreans to create mosaic tiles for the new Johnston Square Community Bench outside of the Enoch Pratt Free Library 's new Johnston Square branch.

We’re blown away by the results.

This bench is such a beautiful representation of the transformation that is possible when we come together as One Baltimore.

Come see it for yourself:

🎨 Calling all Baltimore artists!

Help transform a vacant space into a vibrant community destination. ReBUILD Metro is seeking proposals from local artists to lead the design of a public art and placemaking project at 1233-1237 N. Gay Street in Broadway East.

This is more than creating art—it's an opportunity to collaborate with residents, celebrate neighborhood identity, and help shape a welcoming public space that reflects the community's vision.

On East Hoffman Street, you can truly witness Johnston Square changing block by block: new homes are being redeveloped alongside new gardens, greenspaces, and murals that are being created and expanded by Re-Build Johnston Square and The 6th Branch.

On the 1300 block of Homewood Avenue, our “whole block” redevelopment is now complete, and the 4 homes we have rebuilt here are actively being listed for sale.

Just two blocks away, on the 1300 block of Valley Street, with our partner Edgemont Builders, we have completed interior framing and façade restoration on another 6 formerly abandoned rowhouses—4 of which we are combining into 2 new double-wide homes. These homes will be completed this fall.

Neighborhood transformation takes time, but it is possible, and it is happening in Johnston Square!

These newly rebuilt for-sale homes are part of ReBUILD's “whole block” revitalization of the 1300 block of Homewood Avenue, which is just weeks away from being complete. This is a quiet block overlooking the Johnston Square Farm and Garden, just steps from Open Works and blocks from Penn Station and the Station North Arts District.

These thoughtfully renovated homes offer modern finishes, updated kitchens, enclosed backyards, and comfortable living spaces designed for everyday life. We are so proud to bring these high-quality homeownership opportunities to Johnston Square as part of our block-by-block revitalization of this strong and growing community.

Last week, we were honored to welcome the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and many of our partners and peers to The Hammond at Greenmount Park in Johnston Square as DHCD announced their FY27 awardees for the Baltimore Vacants Reinvestment Initiative (BVRI)—along with two new fantastic programs that will help make buying a home more affordable for Maryland families: Reinvest Baltimore Down Payment Assistance and Reinvest Baltimore Rate Savings.

As a BVRI awardee and a nonprofit dedicated to transforming distressed East Baltimore neighborhoods into healthy communities, ReBUILD is thrilled that the abandoned houses that we are restoring into new homeownership opportunities will now be even more accessible to Baltimore’s aspiring homebuyers. We are proud to continue to be a part of Baltimore’s comeback story—a story that only happens when our City, State, foundations, businesses, and communities are all working together to eliminate vacancy across our city.
