We're celebrating Mother's Day 2024 with a nod to the woman who was essential to Van Gogh's success, his mother Anna Carbentus Van Gogh.

A casual artist in her own right, Anna liked to paint (especially watercolor) and even gave Vincent drawing lessons during his youth!

The painting featured in this post, Portrait of the Artist's Mother, is actually based-upon a black-and-white photo of Vincent's mother he received from his sister Wilhelmina. Vincent discussed the painting in a letter to Theo, writing, "I am doing a portrait of Mother for myself. I cannot stand the colorless photograph, and I am trying to do one in a harmony of color, as I see her in my memory."
