This morning I went out to do my chores at the barn and found this nonsense. The last few days there has been a bun or two out of the nest box, and they are too small to get back in by themselves. This morning ALL of them were out and Blanca had stuck her chew sticks in the nest box! Guess she decided it's time they get their fluffy tails out and get moving around. Now I have been putting them back in the nest box, but I today I did the common practice of turning the box on its side so they can come and go as they please. Since they are still so young they still need to be able to get somewhere warm and snuggle, but mom is right they need to get moving so they can get big and strong. 🐇

Interesting colors showing up in some of these kits. I believe it's steel. They have their eyes open and ears up. Their behavior is changing they are definitely aware of their surroundings and getting more worried about who's picking them up. We lost the third runt this morning, but we are still blessed to have 9 kits. Just another lovely day on the farm.
Eyes open! Now to watch for nest eye! Lovely start to the week. 😁
Daily baby bunny update. We lost another runt, but everyone else is doing well. Soon eyes will open and they will start exploring. Right now it's still eat and sleep, day and night. They sure grow fast!

Home sweet. Rabbits are doing well, pigs are too. We've got wildflowers gracing out pasture. Including blue bonnets! Such a beautiful day. 😍

It's been a peaceful day on the homestead. First rounds this morning found one of the three runts we are concerned with got a lifesaving meal during the night. So I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about them. The majority of the bunnies are doing great, 8 thrivers. I didn't escape unscathed from tending the pigs, figured I'd share with you what pig snout prints look like. They say homesteading is simple living but there's plenty of work to it. And we are just getting started. 😊

Every morning I go out to the barn with Juan and check on our animals. I usually tend Blanca, making sure she's got her daily fresh greens, black oil sunflower seeds and chow. I pet her and pull the nest box check on all the baby bunnies. I look for injuries and empty tummies. Of course 8 of them look fabulous, beautiful coats coming in and their little ears are starting to open up. But there are two little runts left, plus one who's ahead of the runts and behind the rest. The only ones that haven't had milk. Blanca is a good mommy for a first timer but she's got too many babies. I pulled the 8 chonky babies to shelve while the rest stay with mom to hopefully get caught up. Honestly, I'm not terribly optimistic about the two smallest runts catching up after losing the first runt. But we will trying shelving one more day to give them a 3rd chance to catch up.
