The questions I get asked most about my coming out ⬇️

1.Are you still Mormon (LDS)?

No. I left a few months after I got home from my mission in Argentina. My family all left the church in the years following my departure. It was the best decision we all made. I personally would not have survived staying.

2.Can someone be gay and Mormon?

Yes I think lots of people do, but you need thick skin. Ha! Mainly because within most religions marriage is between a man and a woman period. lol so you’ll feel judged/outsider constantly. I personally think the best possible outcome is to find love and acceptance outside of the religion. But it’s hard to believe happiness can be found outside when everyone you love believes true happiness is only inside of religion.

3.Did you lose any relationships after coming out?

Yes. Mainly after leaving Mormonism. A lot of my extended family distanced themselves from me, blocked, etc. a lot of them have since reached out and apologized. Others don’t think they have done anything wrong. Overall I feel lucky my immediate family is supportive that’s more than 90% of folks get.

4.I’m closeted, and want advice on coming out to my religious family?

Only do what’s safe for you. Follow your heart and intuition, they know what is right. Also remember my family took YEARS to fully come around. Some may never come fully around. Don’t park your happiness in that. All the love you will ever need is exactly where it’s supposed to be…RIGHT INSIDE OF YOU.
