Can a brand safely use emojis to convey tone or make messages fun?

I thought so. And, I've been cautiously using emojis with brands I represent for years. They are fun, help to set the tone, and are visually appealing to break up space.

For instance, in an article about nutrition, I've often used broccoli and water drops for bullet points. Or, in a patient-facing podiatry post, using a foot or shoe. Or, a baseball for a sports medicine post. I don't use them often enough to have official guidelines and just use discretion and use them sparingly.

Well, I've been working on Brand Guidelines for a professional association that will be utilizing volunteers to post on Insta, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. So, I dove in deeper than normal with details on these guidelines. And, I decided to include a list of emojis to exclude. As a geriatric millennial, I understand that I shouldn't use an eggplant or a peach. But, because of my "advanced" age, I was planning to first research online and then consult my young adult children on emojis I should avoid.

Friends, I didn't even make it to the second step. Google was enough. Emojis are all dirty now. I rapidly started making a list of emojis not to use - eggplant, peach, corn, hot dog, taco, cherries, noodles, red pepper, this face 🥴, this face 🥵, this face 😈, this face 🤤, dump truck, peace sign, brain, okay hand signal, pointed finger, big eyes, tongue, water droplets, leaves, and hammer. And, I quickly decided to give up as it became abundantly clear that it is a risky move to use an emoji.

So, bottom line: a basic smiley face is probably fine. A thumbs up or high five is likely fine, although the internet says that a thumbs up is passive aggressive. I disagree. Oh, and a laughing so hard that I'm crying emoji is safe, but apparently considered uncool by the hip.

Should Your Practice Have Multiple pages? | Brummitt Group

We are asked fairly often whether or not a practice should have multiple pages. The answer is...it depends. There are a lot of variables to consider. We discuss them in the attached post.

Have a scenario we don't address? Just ask in the comments! We'd love to brainstorm with you to help you find the right direction for your practice.

You all know how we feel about patient experience! Jay Patel and Chris Cook of Ivira Health really have it down! We loved learning about their company, their culture, and how they keep patients at the forefront.

Also, if you are looking for inspiration on marketing that is both effective and good for the community, check out their series. Hands down, it's one of our favorite marketing strategies. Pharmacists are a hugely underutilized resource when it coms to patient education (in our humble opinion). I love that these videos share tangible advice, but also let patients know that their Pharmacist is a resource. Here's an example: https://www.facebook.com/ivirahealth/videos/406977063505277.

How to Grow Volume in a New Urgent Care Center | Brummitt Group

Our ultimate goal for growing volume in an urgent care center is positioning the center as a trusted resource in the community. If people come to the center and have a positive experience, they will tell people and the center volume will grow. Be sure that your team is friendly, billing practices are fair, and that patients leave feeling they got excellent care.

How do you get those early patients in the door though? Google and social media searches, physician outreach, and community outreach are the keys.

Reviewing patient intake email...and I just have to share some insights in the spirit of helping other practices. It is so bad that I almost just posted a picture with the name redacted. 😲

It's fine to highlight, underline, italicize, or all caps 1 item that is super important. When you highlight, underline, italicize, and all caps 16 different spots in an email, it annoys the patient and gets overlooked. 16 things aren't that important. They just aren't.

Why in the world do practices ask patients to be 30 minutes early?! It sets patients up to be frustrated that they waited 30 minutes and then if the provider is running late, it adds insult to injury. Paperwork shouldn't take that long. If clinic is running ahead of schedule, call patients and offer to move them up. If it's to make sure people are on time, don't punish the on-time patients for this.

When sending paperwork ahead of time, make it fillable.

Read the email to be sure nothing is repeated. Multiple items were repetitive about having a full bladder and filling out paperwork. Ugh. Less is more. People only have so much attention to give, so use the most concise language and the least number of words possible to convey the message.

Don't send an email and say in that email to call the office if you need to make changes. Let patients correspond with you via email for non-urgent matters.

Last...and this is just me being picky, sign the email from the actual human being that sent it.

Now...there was some good stuff! 😄 They included the address (although I'd count off because they listed both addresses and highlighted the right one, which doesn't work for patients using non-html email). They gave an expected patient responsibility. They recommended fasting prior to the appointment.
