𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 🇺🇸

This holiday didn't start as a long weekend. It started as a PROTEST. On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched through NYC demanding basic rights: 8-hour days, safe workplaces, and the ability to organize without retaliation. It became a federal holiday in 1894 only after 13 striking workers were killed. Every protection we have today was fought for - never given freely.

Here's what keeps me up at night: Waste collectors had the 4th deadliest job in America in 2023. They're 10x more likely to be killed on the job than the average worker. Non-union workers make $3–$7 less per hour and have no say when their safety gets sacrificed for speed. Companies call it a "labor shortage." I call it a wage and dignity shortage.

If you're in sustainability like I am, ask yourself: Can we really talk about environmental justice while working with companies that don't treat their workers with dignity? Zero waste without worker dignity is just greenwashing.

This Labor Day, I'm committing to:
✅ Prioritizing unionized haulers in procurement recommendations
✅ Including worker safety in sustainability metrics
