UT Austin started offering a Japanese language class as an upper division linguistics course in the Department of Germanic Languages in fall of 1961.

In 1965 Japanese program was moved from the Linguistics Program within the Department of Germanic Languages to the newly established Linguistics Department, and Japanese became one of the foreign languages which satisfy the foreign language requirement. Japanese program moved to the newly established Department of Oriental and African Languages and Literatures in 1970, and for the first time a B.A. degree became available in Japanese. M.A and Ph.D. degrees were approved a few years later. In the early 90's, the Department of Oriental and African Languages and Literatures was split into the Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures and the Departments of Asian Studies, in which Japanese program currently locates.
