Enjoy the rainy weather with us in this nice dry (but humid 😅) greenhouse with a bunch of plants that’ll be happy to see you!

If you are new to growing Nepenthes, you may run into some behavior that looks worrisome. Dying pitchers, yellow leaves, red spots, and powdery stuff are all (usually!) normal and harmless.

When pitchers and leaves die off, that’s usually just an indication that the plant has taken all the energy it can from those sources and is letting go of them, so that it can direct its energy into new growth.

Red speckled spots like the ones shown here are an expression of the fungus that naturally lives in all Nepenthes. If a Nep gets stressed (like when it’s getting rehoused or put in more intense light), the fungus will make an appearance. But you’ll see, that the rest of the leaves are normal and green—an excellent sign of health and recovery from stress!

Lastly, some species do create a powdery substance that acts like sunscreen—not to be confused with powdery mildew! But of course, if you’re ever not sure, send us a picture and we’ll let you know!

The Disa tripetaloides is an unusual terrestrial orchid from South Africa. It grows along the edges of streams and rivers. These orchids are a great addition to any bog collection as their love of wet media allows them to grow happily in the same conditions. This plant is easily reproduced by dividing offshoots of stolons that grow beneath soil. We have found that they grow well in Highland conditions kept in a tray of water.
