Maternal mortality rates surged in Texas during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Dr. Marcos Sosa, director of women’s health at CommUnityCare Health Centers, points out that limited access to care contributed to the increase in deaths.

"My dream is that all hospital systems recruit more OBGYN providers and advance practice providers to come to work in Texas," Sosa said to the Austin American-Statesman. "It can be debilitating to a patient to have to travel one to three hours to get care."
