As National Park Week comes to a close, today’s hike felt especially meaningful. ❤️🏔️

Just days after the passing of Dolly Parton, I hiked the Tennessee mountains she called home — the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This moderate 4-mile RT hike climbs roughly 1,400 feet, with creek crossings, steep inclines and plenty of stone steps before rewarding you with a beautiful overlook near the Chimney Tops.

A beautiful way to end National Park Week and remember an icon who will forever be part of the spirit of these mountains.

This is Pass Lake, a beautiful, small alpine lake just south of Loveland Pass along the Continental Divide. Located at an elevation of 11,834 feet, it is on the eastern border of the White River National Forest.

⛰️ Standing on the Continental Divide

Loveland Pass, situated about 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado, is a spectacular high-elevation mountain crossing, reaching 11,990 feet above sea level. This historic route is located along the Continental Divide, meaning it separates the water flowing into the Atlantic Ocean from the water flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

This was the original route over the Great Divide before I-70 was built. Today, it’s still a must-stop for incredible mountain views and alpine scenery. 🏔️✨

It’s not always sunshine and rainbows... or is it? 🌈✨

At Mount Blue Sky, sometimes the best views are hiding just above the clouds. ☁️🏔️☀️

You might start the 28-mile journey up North America’s highest paved road in gray, rainy weather—climbing over 7,000 feet into the fog. But sometimes if you keep going, the clouds begin to break, the sun hits, and suddenly you’re standing at 14,130 feet in total awe.

​A reminder that sometimes you just have to push through the gray to find the sunshine—and a little mountain magic. 💙✨
