Curl Austin

This Spring, Curl Austin is partnering with the Lone Star Curling Club to teach Austin how to curl. Our Learn-to-Curl class is a 2-hour adventure. We'll give you a crash course in how to curl and quickly get you on the ice to compete against your friends, both those you came with and those you'll meet. You will soon discover that curling is a sport that you can learn in minutes but will take a lifetime to master. The fundamentals of curling are quite simple. Two teams of four people take turns sliding stones down a sheet of ice with the goal of placing their stones closest to the center of the "house," a circular target at each end of the sheet. That's just the basics, however. There's a great deal of planning that goes into offensive and defensive strategies. Oh, and don't forget the brooms! You'll never have more fun sweeping; that's a guarantee!!! Once you learn how to curl, you can join the Lone Star Curling Club as a full-fledged curler and sign up for league play--and here's the exciting part: Curl Austin offers the only dedicated curling ice in the state of Texas! Most curling clubs share their ice with other sports, such as hockey or figure skating. While great fun, skating is rough on the ice, making it irregular. Curlers take great care to prepare their ice, spraying droplets of water to create "pebbling" and then "nipping" it down to its ideal state. Even the slightest imperfection can affect the way a stone travels down the sheet. When curlers have to share the ice with skating, the ice must be started from scratch each day, repairing the damage done by skates--and it never reaches that curling sweet spot. Dedicated ice provides expert ice technicians the opportunity to sculpt perfect ice and preserve it for competitive play. While the distinction between area ice and dedicated ice may not be immediately evident to the novice, once a curler grows accustomed to the ideal sheet, nothing else is the same.
