The EPA has selected the City of Austin to receive a $4 million grant to create a reuse warehouse that will accept furniture donations from residents and then redistribute them to nonprofits working on transitional housing for the homeless.

The city is one of 25 communities to receive the grant as part of EPA's Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling Program.

Once fully operational, the reuse warehouse will accept drop-off furniture donations to redistribute to nonprofit organizations working to furnish transitional homes for the homeless.

Sunrise’s invisible capacity is actually even larger than its visible capacity. Digital service delivery benefits neighborhoods by limiting foot traffic but ALSO benefits people experiencing homelessness by letting them be served from where they are and empowering them to take charge of their housing case.

Sunrise has built one of the largest digital homelessness services delivery systems in the country and we are just getting started!

“An increased homeless presence has been tracked toward the city's edges and in less visible places since Austinites voted in May 2021 to reinstate a public camping ban. Analysts and service providers at that time had predicted such a distribution would take place, likely making it harder to find homeless residents and connect them with supportive services and shelter or housing.” (McAfee & Thompson, 2023)
