It is with a genuine heart that I send my deepest condolences to the family of Aneesah Washington. She attended Clark Atlanta University, making her a special addition to our HBCU family.

In the midst of such a heartbreaking occurrence, it is imperative that in Aneesah’s honor, we move in the direction of shedding light on su***de prevention in our community.

As someone who lost my brother to su***de, I know how difficult it is to handle such a loss. However, losing a loved one to this battle comes with the responsibility of soothing others, as well. Comfort your friends. Listen to family. Ask someone how he/she is really doing, even if that person seems on top of the world. Offering a few seconds of unpretentious concern could change someone’s next step in life.

Suzette Charles Miss America 1984
represented New Jersey in the Miss America Pageant. In 1981 she was a Presidential Scholar and was presented the Presidential gold medallion by President Ronald Reagan.
