WHEN KING PIYE LED KUSH TO CONQUER EGYPT—AND HIS DYNASTY RULED FOR NEARLY A CENTURY

Around 728 BCE, King Piye marched north from the powerful Kingdom of Kush, located in what is now Sudan.

Egypt had become divided among competing rulers. Piye believed it was his sacred responsibility to restore order, reunify the land and defend the ancient spiritual traditions shared by Egypt and Kush.

His armies moved through Upper Egypt, capturing key cities before surrounding Memphis. After defeating the rival rulers, Piye accepted their surrender and returned to Kush rather than permanently ruling from Egypt.

His victory helped establish Egypt’s 25th Dynasty—a line of Kush*te pharaohs who ruled Egypt for nearly a century.

The same Kush*tes who marched north and ruled Egypt also raised pyramids of their own—hundreds of royal monuments across Nubia, in what is now Sudan.

King Piye did not oversee the construction of Egypt’s famous pyramids at Giza. Those monuments were already more than 1,700 years old when he conquered Egypt. His legacy was the restoration of Kush*te power, the reunification of Egypt and the rise of one of Africa’s greatest ancient dynasties.

This was not a foreign invasion. It was an African kingdom reclaiming and preserving an ancient African civilization.

Did you know that the first recorded foreign-born samurai in Japan was actually a man of African descent? 🌍✨
Meet Yasuke. Arriving in Japan in 1579 alongside a Jesuit missionary, his presence caused an absolute frenzy. At over 6 feet tall—towering over the average Japanese citizen at the time—crowds literally broke down doors just to get a glimpse of him.
When the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga first saw Yasuke, he literally thought the man’s skin was dyed with black ink and ordered him to be scrubbed down! Once Nobunaga realized it was natural, he was so deeply impressed by Yasuke's intelligence, quick mastery of the Japanese language, and formidable strength (said to be equal to 10 men) that he took him into his inner circle.

YASUKE: The African Warrior Who Entered Feudal Japan | 1581–1582

Before fiction imagined a Black warrior in feudal Japan, history had already recorded one.

In 1581, an African man known as Yasuke entered the service of the powerful Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga.

Yasuke was given weapons, a residence and a place among Nobunaga’s retainers. He remained with Nobunaga until the violent Honnō-ji Incident of 1582.

After being captured, Yasuke was reportedly returned to the Jesuits. What happened to him afterward remains unknown.

His documented story lasted only about one year—but his legacy has survived for more than four centuries.

What do you think happened to Yasuke after 1582?
