Celebrating the work of Alexander Rodchenko born on this day in 1891. Rodchenko was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design. Rodchenko was one of the most versatile Constructivist and Productivist artists to emerge after the Russian Revolution. He worked as a painter and graphic designer before turning to photomontage and photography. His photography was socially engaged, formally innovative, and opposed to a painterly aesthetic. Concerned with the need for analytical-documentary photo series, he often shot his subjects from odd angles—usually high above or below—to shock the viewer and to postpone recognition. He wrote: “One has to take several different shots of a subject, from different points of view and in different situations, as if one examined it in the round rather than looked through the same key-hole again and again.”

Celebrating the work of Robert Glenn Ketchum on his 75th birthday. Ketchum's imagery and books have helped to define contemporary color photography while at the same time addressing critical national environmental issues. This has made him one of the most successful artist/activists in American history. His work in Alaska illustrate this point, first in the Tongass Rain Forest, where his images were credited with helping to pass the Tongass Timber Reform Bill of 1990. One of his current efforts is in Southwest Alaska, aimed to protect the largest wild salmon habitats from the ill-advised Pebble Mine. Wishing you many more years to continue your work!!

Sharing the work of Philip Hyde today. Hyde's work is featured in the recently released book: Silent Spring Revolution: John F. Kennedy, Rachel Carson, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and the Great Environmental Awakening.

Hyde's photography has been used for environmental activism since the beginning of the movement in the late 40's and early 50's.

Honoring Veterans Day with the work of Harold Feinstein. He was drafted into the army during the Korean War. Already having work chosen by Edward Steichen for inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art photography collection, he requested to serve as a photographer. However those requests fell on deaf ears. Feinstein did take along his camera and documented his Army experience from the bottom up.

Today's post features the work of Walker Evans, born on this day in 1903. For fifty years, from the late 1920s to the early 1970s, Evans recorded the American scene with nuance and precision, creating an encyclopedic visual catalogue of modern America. Best known for his FSA depression era work, the photograph shown here was taken in 1938.

This image is not a "classic" Evans image. It is easy to see the influence of a young Helen Levitt who was his darkroom assistant at the time. In 1937 she began a body of work documenting children's chalk drawings in the street. In fact this specific print was gifted by Evans to Levitt and remained in her personal collection.
