Undergraduate Research Programs has something for any undergraduate student who would like to participate more fully in meaningful research early on in their academic careers. At Emory College, teaching and research go hand-in-hand as experienced faculty bring their commitment to sharing knowledge in the classroom and producing scholarship that makes a valuable contribution to the world. Students bring fresh insights and energy to both teaching and research, creating an even more dynamic intellectual community. URP promotes undergraduate research projects through grants, faculty-student research partnerships, and summer research stipends, offering advantages to both students and faculty. Undergraduate research programs increase retention, improve study skills, and create stronger bonds for students. At the same time, these undergraduate researchers assist faculty in accomplishing ambitious research and allow faculty to work with self-motivated, developing scholars. Undergraduate research programs are available to any undergraduate students in Emory College in good academic standing. Several programs, each suited to different student levels or needs, are offered each year, and students may be accepted in more than one program per academic year.

Every research project begins somewhere: with curiosity, urgency, memory, possibility, or a story that deserves to be understood more fully.

Today, we celebrate the students and faculty mentors who follow those questions with patience, rigor, and imagination.

Why do you research?

Watch Meet the Researcher and attend today’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Archives rarely hand us a complete story. More often, discovery occurs by examining fragments—artifacts that were preserved, documents that were overlooked— and reading between the lines. The drive to find the missing pieces is what propels the research forward.

Strong mentorship offers guidance without closing off discovery. Strong undergraduate research asks students to take initiative, listen deeply, accept feedback, pivot when necessary, and bring their own knowledge to the process.

Meet the faculty–student pairs behind Meet the Researcher and see what becomes possible when mentorship is a two-way street.

Faculty: What question might an undergraduate researcher help you see differently?

07/28/2026

Research does more than help us understand the world. It helps us challenge dominant narratives, grasp overlooked perspectives, and imagine a more just future.

Cabot Postol examines what iron mining in Liberia has meant for labor, land, development and global politics. Laniah Bowdery explores religious traditions that are often misunderstood and the people whose beliefs and experiences deserve to be understood with greater care.

Different questions. Different disciplines. A shared commitment to research beyond the classroom.

Watch Cabot and Laniah share their “why” in Meet the Researcher.

Curiosity sparks the research. Resilience helps carry it forward.

Dr. Adriana Chira describes research as an openness to the unknown—one sustained by reading, relationships, patience, and faith in the story, even when promising paths become dead ends.

Research can look quiet from the outside. Inside the process, it is active: reading, annotating, visiting archives and museums, taking photographs, asking better questions—and paying close attention to what others might overlook.

For Laniah Bowdery, research begins with “a lot of looking” and grows through the connection between what they read and what they encounter in the world.
