🖤🎤 When love turns into pain… who teaches us how to heal?

On Tuesday, March 31 | 5:30 PM (EST)
Dr. JL Adolph takes the mic as keynote for NAMI Sharing Hope

🔥 “Toxic Love & Hip-Hop: The Warning Signs of Suicidal Romance”

Hip-hop didn’t just come from the streets…
It carries the soul of the blues—
mourning, memory, and messages we almost miss.

Sometimes those lyrics ain’t just bars…
They’re warnings. 🚨

💔 Toxic love can look like:
– Violence masked as passion
– Codependency disguised as loyalty
– Silence hiding suicidal thoughts

But we can rewrite the story.
We can remix the mind.

This is for the youth.
For the caretakers.
For anyone trying to catch the signal before it fades.

Hip Hop Writing: Rewriting the Narrative, Remixing the Mind | JL Adoph | TEDxGeorgiaStateU 10/11/2025

🎤 Announcement: My TEDx Talk is now LIVE —

Title: “Hip-hop Writing: Rewriting the Narrative, Remixing the Mind.”

This presentation explores how Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing bridges art, psychology, and education to help communities heal from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

I unpack how writing cyphers can serve as trauma-informed spaces — where students, parents, and educators rewrite the scripts that once defined their pain.

It’s not just pedagogy. It’s therapy in motion — a remix of literacy, culture, and love.

“A Message Carried by Culture”

“It’s like a jungle sometimes… makes me wonder how I keep from going under.”
— Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, The Message

This lyric is more than music—it’s a street-level report, a survival note passed through rhythm.

But here’s the question: The streets speak, but what if your heart could answer?

🖊️ Through Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing (H2TW), we learn to answer back.
One line.
One breath.
One griot at a time.

Transformative Tuesdays ✨
“I don’t wanna be alive… I just wanna lay here.”

Logic’s 1-800-273-8255 wasn’t just a song—it became a lifeline. After its release, calls to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline increased, and studies show it helped save lives.

This is the power of music. The power of storytelling. The power of reminding someone: You are not alone.

Let’s continue to speak life into dads, students, and communities who carry silent battles.

💬 What lyrics have reminded you to keep going?

✨ H2TW: Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing | ✨

“They keep sayin’ I should get help
But I don’t even know what I need.” – Megan Thee Stallion, Anxiety 🎤

I told my students that these bars ain’t weakness—this is wisdom in disguise. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re stupid. It means you’re human, searching for light in a dark tunnel. Ignorance is just the place where knowledge hasn’t reached yet. 🌑➡️🌞

As educators, our mission is not to shame the shadows but to spark the flame. My calling is to help you find that light—whether that means becoming a stronger writer 📚✍🏾 or becoming a healed person ready to rewrite your narrative.

If you’re ready to grow, let’s build together.

Today my students put me on to “Peach Dream” by Lucki. I expected a Gen Z flex track—turns out it’s a young man writing his fight with su***de.

“Got my mama Googling lean, keep sendin’ me kidney stuff.” 💔

That line stopped the class. We talked about why students need therapeutic writing before they clock into the workforce. Writing can’t just be for grades—it’s survival.

Let’s normalize writing to heal. ✍🏾🔥

📅 — Kendrick Lamar’s “Father Time” 📝

H2TW: Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing

In his powerful track “Father Time,” Kendrick Lamar reveals how his dad used street basketball as a metaphor for resilience:

“Daddy issues made me learn losses, I don’t take those well
Momma said, ‘That boy is exhausted,’ he said, ‘Go f** yourself’
If he give up now, that’s gon’ cost him, life’s a b**h.”

Let’s pause and unpack this…

🧠 Was the dad’s response to the mom appropriate? Why or why not?
💬 Have you ever had a co-parent disrupt your “tough love” moment with your child?
👀 What do you think the child learned about life from that interaction?

These moments shape how we love, fight, and feel. At H2TW, we help people—especially dads and students—process moments like these through writing, reflection, and hip-hop healing.

🌊 “Many months of Sundays, I window-shopped, never to receive a morsel of my dad’s attention.”
💔 I stayed enslaved to the hope of his love because he was my Christmas—appearing just enough to quiet the revolt in my heart.

🔥 2Pac’s “Papa’z Song” gave me the words for my rage. My inner voice went from “Where is he?” to “Man—forget him!”
🎵 Hip-hop became my lifeline—my therapy—long before I knew how to name the pain.

If your teen or young adult is carrying unspoken pain, Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing (H2TW) can help them externalize, deconstruct, and rewrite their story—before it turns into emotional lava like mine once did.

💥 Join now and receive 15% off when you enroll in Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing before August 15. Let’s rewrite the narrative together.

🎤 – Malcolm’s Gift 🎁

Remember Theo from The Cosby Show? 📺 In “Theo’s Gift,” we learned he had dyslexia—not a lack of intelligence.

💡 Many students today hide behind long sentences & “big words” because they feel their writing isn’t good enough. But like hip-hop bars 🎵, great writing is about clarity, flow, and confidence—not showing off.

✨ Your child has a gift. H2TW helps students unlock it through Hip-hop Transformative Tutoring & Writing.

💪🏾 Turn writing struggles into breakthroughs. Let their words shine!
