Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs could’ve invented the true crime genre decades before Truman Capote claimed all the credit with In Cold Blood. Fast, ruthless, and cynical, And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks, co-written by the Beat legends in 1945, yet unpublished until 2008, is one of our favorite novels by either author 🦛📚❤️

Loitering with a mischievous grin at the intersection of Blazing Saddles and anything Louis L’Amour, you’ll find God’s Country. Percival Everett’s 1994 wild Western is silly and razor sharp—one of our favorite novels from a living national treasure 📚

Flannery O’Connor wrote grim Southern fiction her mother didn’t particularly enjoy reading. In 1952 she released the novel Wise Blood and introduced the world to Hazel Motes, one of literature’s better known nihilistic evangelicals 📚❤️⛪️
