The UGA Music Business Program was established in 2006 to train the future leaders of this industry in the midst of the Athens music scene.

Our faculty has long-term music industry experience and our students are exposed to all aspects of the music industry—both in the traditional classroom and beyond. Guest lecturers with a variety of backgrounds from all over the country provide our students not only with unique and diverse perspectives, but also invaluable networking opportunities. Every student in the Music Business Program is placed in an internship to gain hands-on, real world experience.

Billboard has recognized the University of Georgia’s Music Business Program, housed within the Terry College of Business, among the nation’s best for preparing the next generation of artists and executives for success in the music industry.

Led by Program Director David Barbe — engineer, producer, musician and writer known for his work with Sugar, Drive-By Truckers, and Chase Park Transduction Studios — the UGA Music Business Program (MBUS) blends classroom learning with hands-on experience in Athens’ legendary music scene.

From managing real-world projects to launching student-run record labels and publishing ventures, Terry MBUS students learn how to navigate and innovate across every facet of the industry. The program’s alumni include executives at Lost Highway Records, Warner Records, and Roc Nation Publishing, as well as emerging artists like Megan Moroney (BBA ’20), who recently returned to campus to share insights on building her career.

The program’s signature course, Emerging Issues in Music Business, keeps students at the forefront of trends and technologies shaping today’s rapidly evolving creative economy.

People. Place. Purpose.

At UGA, business education meets creativity — and the results resonate far beyond the stage.

"You don’t ever get anywhere by yourself. It’s from the help of your village, really. Everybody supports each other."

Like many residents of Nashville, Stephanie Mundy Self harbored dreams of a career on stage. The South Carolina native earned a scholarship to UGA as a voice major in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music but soon saw many of her fellow musicians struggling to get jobs.

She needed a backup plan, and she came up with a good one.

Self added a second major—risk management and insurance in the Terry College of Business—as well as a certificate in music business.

The financial management firm she co-founded, Farris, Self & Moore, now boasts about 60 clients—all of them artists or songwriters. The firm employs 24 staff—seven of them, including Self, are UGA alumni—and they just moved into a new 10,000-square-foot office on Music Row.
