The City of Athens will host a Community Check-In meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Texan, 209 E. Tyler St. in Athens. The event is an opportunity for residents to share input and help guide the city’s future.

The meeting is part of the process to update the 2020 Comprehensive Plan to include measures that will strengthen the community and improve preparedness for natural disasters. The updated plan will address local risks such as flooding and severe weather, while guiding growth and emergency planning.

Intersections Closed

The intersections at Dull Averiette and East Tyler, and North Wofford and East Tyler will be closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, until Friday, Oct. 10. East Tyler Street will remain open to through traffic, but Dull Averiette and North Wofford will be closed to vehicles entering East Tyler. Barricades and signs will be in place to direct traffic. Drivers are asked to plan an alternate route and use caution in the area.

The closures are part of TxDOT’s ongoing repaving project on East Tyler Street.

The 2nd Annual Thunder Over East Texas Air Show will take place Friday, July 4, at the Athens Municipal Airport, 1875 Airport Road. Gates open at 3 p.m., with the show scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. This year’s lineup features the United States Air Force F-16 “Viper” Demonstration Team, crowd favorite Randy Ball flying his MiG-17, the Titan Aerobatic Team, and more. General admission is $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 5–12, and free for kids 4 and under. Reserved seating is available for $60 and limited to 300 seats. Parking is $5 cash. Proceeds from the event benefit the Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation, with net proceeds donated to veterans’ organizations that primarily support the many veterans living in the East Texas area.
