October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. šŸ¤

This month, we remember the babies who were deeply loved but gone too soon, and we hold space for the families who carry them in their hearts every day.

Your baby mattered. Your love matters. And their story will always be part of yours.

Sending extra love this month to every family who has experienced pregnancy or infant loss. šŸ¤

Welcome Selah! Sometimes babies have their own plans! šŸ’•

This soon-to-be mom of five was planning beautiful birth at home, but this little one decided to keep everyone guessing. After lots of time, patience, and hard pushing without the progress we wanted to see, the decision was made to transfer to the hospital for some additional support.

And eventually we found out why she was making things a little more challenging! This chunky 9 lb 11 oz baby girl was born with her hand tucked right up under her chin, making her head a little off-center as she worked her way down and out. Whew! šŸ˜…

Birth doesn’t always unfold exactly as planned, and sometimes the safest path means changing the plan along the way. Mom worked incredibly hard, and in the end, that sweet baby was finally in her arms. Congratulations to this family on the birth of sweet Selah. šŸ’—

✨ What happens when a baby needs help breathing after birth?

Most babies transition beautifully after birth with little intervention. But occasionally, a baby needs some extra help taking those first breaths.

This photo captures one of those moments.

Here, two BirthWise midwives are providing positive-pressure ventilation with a bag and mask while Mom and Dad remain right there—close to their baby, talking to their baby and encouraging their little one through those first moments.

Midwives who attend out-of-hospital births come prepared for situations like this. We carry neonatal resuscitation equipment and maintain training in newborn resuscitation so that when a baby needs support, we can recognize it and respond quickly.

And sometimes that response is as simple—and as important—as helping move air into a baby’s lungs until they begin breathing effectively on their own.

Birth is usually beautifully uncomplicated. But being supportive of physiologic birth doesn’t mean being unprepared for the unexpected.

It means knowing when to watch, when to wait…and when to act.

Welcome to the world, Charlotte! šŸ’•

This sweet 8 lb 8 oz baby girl is baby number three for this wonderful family—and Mom has now experienced birth in three different settings! Her first baby was born in the hospital, her second in a birth center, and this time she chose to welcome Charlotte right at home with BirthWise.

And just look at that sibling love! Big brother and big sister are already completely smitten with their newest little bundle. There’s something so special about welcoming a baby at home, right into the everyday love and life of the family.
Congratulations to this beautiful family, and welcome, Charlotte! šŸ¤

✨ DID YOU KNOW? A lot is happening in that peaceful first hour after birth…without necessarily looking like much is happening at all.

When mom and baby are both doing well, there isn’t a need to immediately separate them or rush through the newborn exam.

Instead, baby can settle skin-to-skin on Mom’s chest while we quietly assess both of them. We’re watching baby’s breathing, color, heart rate and transition to life outside the womb. We are monitoring Mom’s bleeding and vital signs and making sure the uterus is firm and contracting appropriately.

The placenta is born. Baby often begins showing feeding cues and may have that first latch. Everyone gets a chance to meet each other. šŸ¤

And that newborn exam you see in so many of our photos? Weight, measurements and a more complete head-to-toe assessment can often wait until after that initial bonding time.

There’s a lot of clinical care happening in those first moments—but when everything is going well, it all can happen quietly, right where Mom and baby already are.

Sometimes good care looks like doing a lot.

And sometimes it looks like knowing when not to interrupt.

This sweet 8 lb baby was born peacefully at home—and we love hearing Mom’s words about her experience:

ā€œMy labor and delivery was calm, and Gina had the perfect balance of support and a hands-off presence. No pressure, just encouragement. This was my 7th baby (3rd home birth) and my best birth yet.ā€

Seven babies, three home births, and her best birth yet. šŸ’› What an incredible compliment and such a beautiful reflection of what individualized midwifery care can look like—being present, offering support and encouragement, and also knowing when to simply give a laboring mom the space to do what she knows how to do.

Congratulations to this wonderful family, and welcome, Rowan! 🌿

Welcome to the world, Micah! šŸ’™

This sweet 7 lb 10 oz baby boy was born at the BirthWise birth center after just a 5½-hour labor—and for a first-time mom, he certainly didn’t waste much time making his entrance!

Could staying properly aligned have had a little something to do with it? šŸ˜‰ Mom is the owner of Flow Family Chiropractic and has spent her career helping countless women feel their best throughout pregnancy. It was so special to see her on the other side this time—experiencing a healthy pregnancy and an absolutely beautiful birth of her own baby boy.

We are so happy for this wonderful new family and grateful they trusted us to be a small part of such a big moment in their lives. šŸ’›

Welcome, Micah!
