She became a doctor at 44. Then she spent the next 40 years helping shape homeopathy.

Dr. Margaret Lucy Tyler (1859–1943) did not follow the typical path into medicine. She entered medical training later in life, qualifying as a physician in 1903 at 44.

She went on to serve on the staff of the London Homeopathic Hospital for the rest of her life, becoming an influential physician, teacher and writer during an important period in British homeopathy.

But perhaps her most enduring contribution was her ability to bring the materia medica to life.

Rather than simply presenting long lists of symptoms, Tyler described homeopathic medicines as memorable “drug pictures,” drawingon the work of Hahnemann, Hering, Allen, Farrington, Nash and other leading homeopaths, as well as her own clinical experience.

Her writings eventually became the classic "Homoeopathic Drug Pictures," a work that continues to be read by students and practitioners of homeopathy more than 80 years after its original publication.

Margaret Tyler's story is also a wonderful reminder that an important life's work does not necessarily begin when we are young.

Sometimes, it begins at 44.

European researchers recently published a case series of four female patients with recurrent urinary tract infections.

All four were treated successfully with homeopathy after several conventional approaches produced no improvement. The follow-up period was a minimum of 3 years, and the frequency of episodes with urinary tract infection, as well as of antibiotic treatment, was documented.

Additionally, the patients were asked to assess the treatment outcome retrospectively in a validated questionnaire.

Results: The treatment reduced urinary tract infections and the need for antibiotics from monthly to less than 3 times a year. Three of the four women had no cystitis and related intake of antibiotics for more than 1.5 years. A relapse of symptoms could be treated efficiently with a repetition of the homeopathic remedy.

Conclusion: This case series suggests a possible benefit of individualized homeopathic treatment for female patients with recurrent urinary tract infections.
