You don’t have to own a Bloomberg terminal or hire a psychic to make good investments.
Because humans are basically evolved crows, oftentimes we cope with sadness by buying shiny/new/fun things. I’ll admit I love the rush of hitting that buy button, tracking my package, and then ripping it open when it shows up on my doorstep. And I’ll willing to bet you do to.
The rush of buying something shiny can be an easy distraction from the root cause of whatever emotion we need to deal with. Don’t let your short-term feelings get in the way of your long-term success.
You may want to take an honest look at what you can afford to spend (yes, the dreaded B word: Budget) and ask yourself if what you are buying is going to bring the satisfaction you hope it will.
Consider enforcing a bedtime for the buy button; studies have shown as the day wears on our will to resist wears down too.

Just this week I saw an account with this mistake.
Investing isn’t putting money into a different account. Investing is exchanging cash for some other asset the we expect will become more valuable. And that exchange is something we have to do, it isn’t automatic.

A survey of retirees found that 61% said “please don’t let me run out of money” while the remaining 39% admitted they were more afraid of leaving this mortal plane.
We’re really out here more scared of an empty bank account than the grim reaper.
I think that’s a pretty damn good reason to talk about retirement planning! If “broke but breathing” scares the bejeezus out of you, let’s have a conversation asap.

Know what’s scarier than your credit card balance? Bringing it up at brunch.
We’ll throw shade at the government, talk about our therapist drama, even dish on our s*x life, but the second money comes up?
But staying quiet doesn’t make the stress go away. It just lets it sit there and get real weird. Especially when we don’t talk about money with a significant other, we end up making huge life decisions while just hoping for the best.
So consider this your permission slip to bring it up. Not perfectly. Not even with a whole speech that you practiced five times in the shower. Just… start. Ask a question instead of making an announcement.
And if you need back-up? That’s literally what I’m here for. No jargon, no judgement.
