I think density is one of the most overlooked variables in training.
Curious, what’s a variable you think coaches don’t talk about enough?
Coaching never stops.
One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is trying to sprint like an elite athlete before they’ve developed the coordination to do it.
We often hear athletes being told to attack the ground or be more aggressive.
Those are great coaching cues but only when the athlete is ready for them.
Early in the learning process, we actually want athletes to have slightly more time in the air.
Why?
Because more airtime gives them more time to reposition their body, organize the movement, and learn the mechanics of acceleration.
As their coordination improves, we gradually ask them to become more aggressive.
Less airtime.
Less time to reposition.
More force into the ground.
Greater technical demands.
The movement becomes faster, but it also becomes more difficult.
That’s why elite accelerators look so violent.
They’re not simply trying harder.
They’ve developed the skill to organize their body in less time.
Before athletes earn that ability, forcing them to be overly aggressive often leads to poor positions, rushed movements, and inefficient mechanics.
We shouldn’t coach every athlete the same way.
We should coach the athlete that’s in front of us.
Development comes first.
Expression comes later.
Master the rules.
Then earn the right to break them.
Don’t coach the movement you want. Coach the movement the athlete is ready to perform.

Testing is only valuable if the information you collect actually helps you understand the athlete and guide the training process.
Within our Framework Development System, we track multiple performance qualities to build a more complete picture of each athlete.
COMPOSITE SCORE
Our Composite Score brings multiple performance metrics together to give us a broader view of an athlete’s overall physical profile and allows us to track how that profile develops over time.
COUNTERMOVEMENT JUMP
CMJ testing helps us monitor jump performance and changes in an athlete’s force and power characteristics.
But we also use it as a readiness marker.
By comparing an athlete’s current outputs to their normal ranges, we can better understand how they may be responding to training, recovery, and accumulated workload before making decisions about the day’s session.
SPRINT TIME
Speed should be measured.
Sprint timing allows us to objectively track acceleration and speed development instead of relying solely on what looks fast.
REACTIVE STRENGTH INDEX
RSI helps us monitor an athlete’s reactive strength qualities and how they interact with short ground-contact demands.
Like the CMJ, RSI can also be used within our readiness process to help us identify changes in an athlete’s normal outputs and determine whether training intent may need to be adjusted that day.
But here’s the important part…
No single number tells us everything about an athlete.
A lower readiness marker doesn’t automatically mean an athlete doesn’t train.
It gives us more information.
We combine objective performance data with coach observation, athlete communication, training history, and the demands placed on the athlete outside of our facility.
From there, each athlete has a personal performance profile that allows us to monitor development and make more informed programming decisions throughout the training process.
Data doesn’t replace coaching.
It supports it.
The goal isn’t to collect more numbers.
The goal is to make better decisions for the athlete in front of us.
Track. Learn. Adjust. Develop.
