The benefits of using interior designers have been highlighted in the past decade with a series of reality TV shows such as ABC's one-week home transformation show Extreme Makeover and HGTV's competition-themed Design Star.

Some states require interior designers to be licensed. The National Council for Interior Design Qualification handles the testing. Applicants must have six years combined of education and experience, along with at least two years of postsecondary education.
