Yesterday I shared a post about common misconceptions around defensible space.
One of the biggest ones is the idea that more clearing automatically means better wildfire protection.
Here’s what often gets missed: wildfire doesn’t move like a lawnmower — it moves through continuity. Fire spreads when vegetation connects horizontally and vertically, allowing heat, flame, and embers to transfer from one fuel to the next.
When clearing is done without a plan, it can leave dense vegetation in the wrong places, create wind tunnels, or remove plants that actually help slow fire spread.
Effective defensible space isn’t about clearing everything. It’s about breaking fuel continuity in the right locations based on slope, vegetation type, and how fire is likely to approach a structure.

3 Things Homeowners Commonly Misunderstand About Defensible Space
One thing I see over and over is homeowners doing something — but not always the right things.
Here are three common misunderstandings I run into all the time:
1. More clearing doesn’t automatically mean better protection.
How and where vegetation is managed matters more than just how much is removed.
2. Passing an inspection doesn’t always equal real wildfire resilience.
Inspections are a baseline, not a guarantee.
3. One-size-fits-all advice usually misses the mark.
Slope, access, vegetation type, and home construction all matter.
Defensible space should be intentional — not rushed or reactive.
I’ll break these down more in future posts, but if defensible space has ever felt overwhelming, that’s completely normal.

If you’re new here, this is a good place to start.
I’m Lori, the owner of GRIND FIRE DEFENSE in Northern California.
I work with homeowners, HOAs, and property managers in fire-prone areas, focusing on defensible space and vegetation management that’s grounded in real fire behavior — not shortcuts or scare tactics.
A lot of people feel overwhelmed by wildfire rules, inspections, and conflicting advice. My role often starts with helping people understand what actually matters for their property and why.
This page is where I share practical, experience-based information about defensible space, vegetation management, and wildfire preparedness — so homeowners can make informed decisions without feeling pressured or upsold.
If you’re here to learn, you’re in the right place.
