Tooth Decay: MedlinePlus 09/23/2026

Our mouths are full of bacteria. Some bacteria are helpful. But some can be harmful, including the ones that play a role in tooth decay. These bacteria combine with food to form a soft, sticky film called plaque. The bacteria in plaque use the sugar and starch in what you eat and drink to make acids. The acids begin to eat away at the minerals on your enamel. Over time, the plaque can harden into tartar. Besides damaging your teeth, plaque and tartar can also irritate your gums and cause gum disease.

Diabetes, Gum Disease, & Other Dental Problems - NIDDK 09/16/2026

Diabetes affects many parts of your body, including your mouth . People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease, cavities, and other problems with their teeth and gums. And some of these mouth problems can make your diabetes worse. Diabetes can affect your mouth by changing your saliva, the fluid that keeps your mouth wet. Saliva helps prevent tooth decay by washing away pieces of food, preventing bacteria from growing, and fighting the acids produced by bacteria. Saliva also has minerals that help protect tissues in your mouth and fight tooth decay.

Tooth Decay: MedlinePlus 09/09/2026

Tooth decay is damage to a tooth's surface, or enamel. It happens when bacteria in your mouth make acids that attack the enamel. Tooth decay can lead to cavities (dental caries), which have holes in your teeth. If tooth decay is not treated, it can cause pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

What Is a Chipped Tooth? 08/17/2026

Chipped and cracked teeth are both common reasons why people visit the dentist. With a chip, some enamel breaks off. A cracked, or fractured, tooth involves a break that runs through your tooth. Both conditions may be harmless or serious enough to require dental work. You’ll need to see a dental provider to know for sure.

What is a Root Canal? - American Association of Endodontists 08/17/2026

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure to remove inflamed or infected pulp on the inside of the tooth, which is then carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth.

What Is a Chipped Tooth? 08/17/2026

A chipped tooth happens when a fragment of your tooth’s outer protective layer (enamel) breaks off. Trauma to your mouth or biting something hard are both potential causes. Depending on how serious the chip is, you may need dental work to repair your tooth and protect it from further damage. You may need a cosmetic procedure to restore your smile.
