As a result of mixing broadcast for the church lately, I’ve learned a few key elements that seem to make a significant difference. First - in this position, you’ve become the mix and mastering engineer at the same time.

The mix needs compression to fit down that tight wavelength but also needs to be full and intelligible. Apparently, viewing less significant items from a subtractive perspective allows room for the key elements to be present at their prime time in the mix. This can be accomplished by keying into the compressor from the adjacent track, but can also be accomplished by combining and compressing like elements as a group. This allows for each “bubble” to respond somewhat independently and allows them to not interfere with the level of each other throughout the mix. The combination will ultimately be compressed overall, which will tie it all together - generally providing the space needed to allow for any solos or riffs that may appear in the mix together.
