Angelia Mendez Silva is a Program Manager in MEP Engineering at Interplan.
She took ten years to finish her degree. She raised a daughter. She moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando to give her child a better education. She walked into a receptionist interview and walked out with an engineering career.
She was working full time, going to school full time, and being a mom full time all at once. Every single part of her story looked impossible from the outside. She did it anyway.
No matter how intimidating it seems, it can be done. Angelia Mendez Silva is proof.

Her advice is simple because she lived it.
"I didn't think that I would be able to get to where I am today. That was a super unreachable goal, maybe something that happens in movies. But I made it and I just kept going and I never gave up." Stick to it. Believe in yourself. Stay engaged. Stay willing to learn. "A good, positive attitude and just keep going. That's all you need."

Someone gave her a tip. Take this opportunity, apply for the receptionist position at this engineering firm, get your foot in the door, let everybody get to know you. She was still finishing school so the timing was perfect.
She applied. They called her in. They started looking at her resume.
"So you're here for the receptionist position?" She said yes. She had her whole spiel ready. They looked again. "But it says here that you're about to finish electrical engineering." She said yes, that too.
"No, hold on. I'm gonna stop right here. I'm gonna go get the engineers because they need to interview you." Six months later she had her first full time position as an engineer.
"The rest is history."

She starts to cry. She stops herself. "No. I don't want to let it fall."
It took her about ten years to finish her degree. She was working. She had her daughter in 2013 and stepped away from school to raise her.
When she came back it was work, motherhood, and one of the hardest degrees you can earn, all at the same time. When her daughter was around three years old she and her partner made a decision.
They were both servers. They could get by but not enough to give her the education they wanted for her. "We decided it was best for her to come to the United States."
The sacrifice had a silver lining. Orlando had a campus for the same Polytechnic University she had started at in San Juan. She could finish the degree she started. "It was just a perfect scenario for that big sacrifice." Ten years. One daughter. Two countries. One degree.

"Get in the door. Let people get to know you. Let the rest follow."
Angelia Mendez Silva applied for a receptionist job at an engineering firm. She was about to graduate as an electrical engineer. The HR team stopped mid-resume. They went and got the engineers.
She started her first day at Interplan on March 16, 2020. By the end of the week, everyone had been sent home. She learned a new job remotely while homeschooling her daughter. She stayed anyway.
Today she's a Program Manager in our MEP Engineering department.

She Applied for Receptionist. They Called the Engineers. | Interplan Angelia Mendez Silva applied for receptionist and left as an engineer. Her women in engineering story at Interplan.
Angelia Mendez Silva is a Program Manager in MEP Engineering at Interplan.
It was her aunt who convinced her. "She's a civil engineer. She kind of convinced me that hey, this is something that you can do. I'm a civil engineer. My sister is an electrical engineer."
Angelia looked at the women in her family who had already done it and made a decision.
"She's a woman in a man-led field. If she can do it, I can do it. So I kind of took it as a challenge."
From there she started developing a passion for renewable engineering. That's what she was gearing toward.
"The rest is history."

After everything, the ten years, the two countries, the sacrifice, the degree, she spent a day getting her hair done, trying on outfits, and loving every second of it.
"I've never done anything like this before, so it was cool. I felt like a little girl changing into all the little outfits. Like, oh, I love this one."

Krishna Desai is a Project Manager in Civil Engineering at Interplan.
She started knowing almost nothing. Fresh out of school, no resume ready, convinced she bombed her first interview. Her first manager asked her one question that mattered: are you willing to learn? She said yes and meant it.
She learned to draw the line. Then she learned to lead the project. Then she became the first female project manager in the civil department and the youngest in the company.
Now she has a team. Now she shows others the way.
"You do have the power to shift mindsets. It's not something that can only be done by a man. It's something that a woman can do too. You'll be the one to show them that."

Her advice to any woman starting out in engineering.
"If I were to give advice to someone that was in my position or starting their engineering career, it'd be that you do have the power to shift mindsets. It's not something that can only be portrayed that a man can do. It's something that a woman can do too. You'll be the one to show them that."
