Mayor Bass's office released a series of tips for Angelenos to follow before, during and after storms:

🔸️Before a storm
▪️ Sign up for emergency alerts through NotifyLA
▪️Make an emergency plan with family and prepare essential supplies, including medications, flashlights, important documents and pet supplies.
▪️Check the Los Angeles County Flood Zone Determination website to see whether a residence is in a flood zone; flood insurance coverage typically takes 30 days to take effect, so those needing coverage should act now
▪️Pick up free sand and sandbags at fire stations across the city, especially those living in burn scar or flood prone areas. A full list of participating stations can be found here
▪️Clean gutters, yard drains and secure outdoor furniture
▪️Charge mobile devices

🔸️During severe weather
▪️Follow all official instructions, including evacuation or shelter in place orders
▪️Avoid driving if possible - and avoid walking through flooded streets
▪️Stay away from downed power lines and assume all downed lines are live. ▪️Outages can be reported to The City of Pasadena or SCE

🔸️After the storm
▪️Report any flooding, mudslides, fallen trees and potholes by calling 311 or downloading the MyLA311 app
▪️Report any sewer and storm drain concerns to the L.A. Department of Sanitation by calling 1-800-773-2489
▪️Check hillsides and walls for visible cracks and/or movement
▪️Photograph property damage for insurance purposes
▪️Contact the appropriate city department before beginning repairs

It's not just moisture that officials are worried about, as El Niño also influences global temperatures. It's part of the reason why SoCal is experiencing record breaking heat right now.

This overall rise in temperatures could lead to as many as 451,000 more people dying from heat-related causes between this past June and the end of February 2027, according to a report from the University of Chicago's Climate Impact Lab.

Head over to the storied Alkebu-lan Cultural Center to catch an incredible showcase of black-and-white photography by Altadena local, Alfred Haymond.

RECIPE OF THE DAY

Ground Beef and Gravy
🔸️Ingredients
• ▢1 pound ground beef (I used 80/20)
• ▢2 Tablespoons salted butter
• ▢2 cloves garlic, minced
• ▢1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
• ▢½ teaspoon black pepper
• ▢2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
• ▢2 cups beef broth (can use low or no sodium)
• ▢1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

🔸️Instructions
▪️In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook 1 pound ground beef, breaking it up into crumbles until there is no pink left, 8-10 minutes. I like to get a little char on the beef if possible.
▪️Drain any excess grease and place meat back into skillet.
▪️Lower the temperature to medium heat and add 2 Tablespoons salted butter. Allow the butter to melt.
▪️Stir in 2 cloves garlic, minced, 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion and ½ teaspoon black pepper until fragrant, 30 seconds.
▪️Add 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour and stir it in, cook for 1 minute.
▪️Slowly stream in 2 cups beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
▪️Add 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and stir it in.
▪️Simmer for 5 minutes until thickened, serve immediately over mashed potatoes
