AMRT wishes a Happy Birthday!

On July 7 2023, after a week of searching, using CalTopo to manage the entire operation, we posted a CalTooo map of a missing person’s route. Two ultra runners had run that route, and called in information to the team that led us to the discovery of his body.

Like all search and rescue teams, we have used CalTopo on every operation- from sending “here’s my location” text messages to victims, to tracking the flights of our UAS’s and tracks of our rescuers in the field in real time, to helping managing evacuations in Urban areas.

It’s an incredibly powerful tool and we could not imagine search and rescue without it today.

03/27/26: Members of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team were at the junction of Fern Truck trail and the Gabrielino trail to answer questions and meet all the great hikers!

We even had a Mtn. Biker arrive with a few minor injuries after experiencing an unplanned meeting with the ground. The Mtn. Biker was patched up and was able to ride off just fine.

Thank you to all the hikers who took the time to stop and ask great questions and get directions to the Brown Mtn. Dam.

03/21/26: Your Altadena Mountain Rescue Team successfully passed its annual Technical Rock certification. The Team has been training hard for the last year and it paid off!

With today’s qualification, AMRT is able to maintain its National Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) accreditation.

Today our UAS team was requested by to help find a missing person. When there are miles of rugged terrain and copious canyon drainages to search, advanced technology like this helps increase our chances of success.

Today our UAS team tested a new Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi detection tool mounted on our drone. In simple terms: this device detects signals from everyday electronics like smartwatches, earbuds, fitness trackers, and other Bluetooth gadgets a missing person might be carrying.

By flying grids over an area, the system builds a map of where those signals are strongest. That can help point our ground teams toward a person faster—especially in rough terrain, poor visibility, or at night when it’s hard to spot someone with cameras alone.

This was a controlled demo at our headquarters, but the goal is real: shave precious minutes off our search times and give missing people a better chance of coming home.
