Red Sun Classical Fencing is a traditional Italian Sala di Armi (fencing school, lit. “room of weapons”) in Albuquerque, NM.

Our primary focus is upon the Italian dueling weapons of the 18th and 19th century, the spada (sword) and the sciabola (sabre). Red Sun Classical Fencing is a traditional Italian Sala di Armi (fencing school, lit. “room of weapons”) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is a member sala of the Classical Fencing Society. Our primary focus is upon the Italian dueling weapons of the 18th and 19th century, the spada (sword) and the sciabola (sabre); though all students begin with the classical Italian foil, the instrument with which the techniques of the Science are taught and learned. The training curriculum at Red Sun Classical Fencing is firmly based upon Maestro William Gaugler’s text, The Science of Fencing, as well as that developed by the Classical Fencing Society for nearly 20 years. Ongoing training focuses on practical combat and additional weapons; see the Weapons page for a list of those weapons taught at the school. Unlike sport/modern fencing organizations in the area, Red Sun Classical Fencing is a school of fencing, not a club. This difference means that complete understanding of the systems of defense is our principal objective, not scoring points. We follow a classical pedagogy of a traditional system; the process is logical and focuses on the practical combative techniques passed down to us through the lineage of fencing masters. Rather than adopt unnecessary rules and distort techniques, we maintain the precise and efficient use of dueling weapons. This is fencing as it was intended; a fighting art and training for a duel. If competition, scoring points, being ranked, or using the modern weapons only as instruments for those goals is important to you, then you’ll probably find a sport/modern fencing club more to your liking. However, if you like swords and want to learn how to use one properly, if you like the history of swords and fencing, if you want to be a part of a western martial arts tradition that goes back for centuries, or even if you want to complement your sport fencing techniques, then traditional/classical fencing is for you.

Congratulations to you all. It was my honor and pleasure to serve on your examination boards.

So, unfortunately, plans with Instructor Newton fell through.

However, rather than lose the date and the planning, we've decided to pivot, and Maestro Mank will step in and teach a sabre intensive in the method of the Scuola Magistrale (rather than strictly Radaellian). Date, times, and schedule of the original post remain the same, only the content (and, of course, the instructor) is changing. If you had travel plans to come out, please consider going through with them.

An event with a link for registration will be posted this evening or tomorrow morning.

Radaellian Sabre Seminar 2026

Red Sun Classical Fencing will once again be hosting Mr Sean Newton, Instructor at Arms, to lead a workshop on the Radaellian method of Italian Sabre. Registration for this event will be opening within the next week or two, but we wanted to get this on your calendars! Given the weapon in use and the space we'll be in, attendance will be limited to 24 participants!

Mr Newton has spent a significant portion of his 25 year fencing career on the study of various styles of Italian Sabre, and during this workshop will be leading 6 hours of instruction on the Radaellian method of Italian Sabre, as presented by Settimo del Frate and Giordano Rossi. This event is geared towards Classical Fencers, HEMA Practitioners, SCA fencers, and indeed, anyone who wants to learn more about this system of sabre fencing.

Once more details for this event are finalized (specific content, cost to participate, etc) an Event for this workshop will be created with a link to register for the event. Here are the known details:
