DRC is saddened by the loss of disability rights activist Judy Heumann. Considered the “mother of the disability rights movement,” her life and legacy made an extraordinary impact in the lives of persons with disabilities.

From her influence in national disability rights laws, serving as an advisor to multiple president’s, helping found the Berkeley Center for Independent Living, and her unwavering commitment to fighting for disability rights—her legacy cannot be understated.

DRC Executive Director Andy Imparato says, "Cornel West has said 'you can't lead the people if you don't love the people.' One of Judy's greatest qualities as a leader for more than 50 years has been her ability to love her fellow disability activists, to learn about their lives, and to try to help them achieve their dreams. I am grateful to have known her and worked with her for the last three decades, and I look forward to celebrating her life and building on her legacy as our global movement continues to grow and extend our impact."

Meet Josh: "Josh, neurodivergent (ASD and epilepsy) was diagnosed with ASD in 2019, just 3 months before he and his wife Kelly (neurotypical) welcomed their first child into the world. Josh quickly found that there are very few resources in existence for adults who receive autism diagnoses, for neurodiverse couples, or for autistic parents. In order to help his neurodivergent community, he and his wife have created a blog, "Married with Autism," in which he shares details of his struggle to come to terms with his diagnosis, to learn how to successfully be a husband and a father, to advocate for himself, and to begin to thrive after over 40 years in the dark about his own identity."
