📚 MONDAY REMINDER FOR PARENTS:

A new school year doesn’t mean students have to start the year knowing everything.

Math concepts may feel rusty. Reading may take a little more effort after summer break. New classes may feel challenging at first.

That’s okay.

The first few weeks of school are a great time to identify where a student may need a little extra support, before small learning gaps turn into bigger frustrations.

At ABQ Tutor, my goal is to help students understand what they’re learning, strengthen their foundational skills, and build confidence one step at a time.

📚 Pre-Algebra Tip Friday: Turn the Words Into Math!

One of the most important skills in Pre-Algebra is learning how to translate a word problem into a mathematical expression or equation.

When you see phrases like:

• “more than” → think addition
• “less than” → think subtraction
• “as many as” → think multiplication
• “divided equally” → think division
• “is” → often means equals (=)

💡 Tip: Don’t rush to calculate! First ask yourself: What is the problem telling me, and what am I trying to find?

Once you can turn the words into math, solving the problem becomes much easier.

Strong Pre-Algebra skills start with understanding what the math is saying.

Why I Start With the Foundation?

When a student is struggling with a new concept, sometimes the problem isn’t the new material itself. It’s a skill from an earlier grade that was never fully mastered.

At ABQ Tutor, I take the time to identify those learning gaps and strengthen the foundation before moving forward. Once those missing pieces begin to fall into place, students often find that the “hard” material suddenly makes much more sense.

My goal isn’t simply to help students finish tonight’s homework. It’s to help them truly understand what they’re learning, build confidence, and develop skills they can carry into future classes.

As students move into middle and high school, science becomes more complex. Suddenly, they’re expected to understand everything from cells and genetics to chemical reactions, forces, energy, and scientific calculations.

Don’t Memorize- Understand Why.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to memorize math rules without understanding the reasoning behind them.

Whether you’re solving equations, working with fractions, or learning geometry, focus on understanding the concept first, then work through the solution step by step. When you truly understand why a rule works, you’re much more likely to remember it during quizzes, tests, and future math classes.

💡 Remember: Strong math skills are built through understanding and consistent practice- not memorization.
