Look at your hands. Every callus has a story. Every blister has a season attached to it.
Daniel James Brown describes
what the Washington Crew’s hands looked like
by the end of the 1936 season.
Calluses layered over old calluses.
Blisters that had healed and returned
so many times they had become
part of the landscape of the palm.
He writes about it not as damage
but as documentation.
That a rower's hands
are a physical record of everything they have done. Every session,
every winter, every race.
Written in skin.
Look at yours right now.
What season are you currently in?
And how many seasons are still visible there?
