The cost of installing a lightening conductor on your house (UGX) DIY;

1. Lightening arrester = 160k
2. Copper tape = 400k
3. Copper Mat = 200k
4. Wall clamps and plugs = 100k
5. Charcoal = 40k
6. Labour = 500k

TOTAL = 1,400,000/=
******************************************
One million four hundred thousand Ugandan shillings (1.4m UGX) is all you need to have a lightening conductor on your house. Ok, the 400k is for EcoConcrete Ltd to guarantee that you have the right quality of materials and your children will not touch that copper tape and get a charge load of electrons, either from umeme leakage or lightening itself. It’s unfortunate that most lightening conductors installed in Uganda offer very little protection from electrical and lightening shocks. The problem starts with the size of the copper tape used and whether it is insulated or not. A few conductors have received and transmitted lightening loads. For any conductor of electricity that is accessible to humans and animals, insulation is important. A copper tape that is not insulated is a high risk point on a house exposed to lightening and electricity leakages. Naked copper tapes is all I see on houses that have installed lightening conductors. It’s not the best, but it’s better than not having a lightening conductor on your house. Below are the components of a lightening conductor and their current prices on the market.

1. We start with the lightening arrester. This is the 4-pinned rod that we fix on the highest point of your house. It costs 160,000 UGX.

2. The copper tape is connected direct from the lightening arrester and runs along the wall and into the ground where the captured lightening is discarded. The copper tapes come in different thicknesses and widths. The common on the Ugandan market are 2.5mm thick naked, 3.0mm thick naked, and 3.0mm insulated, with price per meter at 20,000/=, 25,000/= and 40,000/= respectively. A standard house will need 10 meters of the copper tape.
