Pheasants get their name from the city of Phasis. In ancient times, Phasis was the easternmost city in Pontus, on the southern bank of the river Phasis, founded by the inhabitants of Miletus for trade purposes, as a fortified storehouse and colony. At the site of ancient Phasis is the present city of Poti (Georgia). According to legend, pheasants were brought to Europe by the Argonauts.

Despite the fact that the pheasant is an acclimatized species, it has become one of the jewels of Ukraine's nature. Unfortunately, the survival of this species is threatened by the destruction of floodplain meadows, cutting down of shelterbelts, the use of herbicides and pesticides, and especially hunting. To preserve the species, it is necessary to ban hunting of this bird, conduct agriculture in a nature-based manner, feed birds in harsh winters, and preserve shrubs and floodplain meadows. The pheasant is protected under the EU Wildlife Directive and the Bern Convention.

As winter approaches, these large daytime birds gather in flocks, with roosters keeping separate from hens. In severe frosts, many pheasants die of cold and hunger if people do not take proper care of them. On the European continent, pheasants have no shortage of natural enemies, against which they are essentially defenseless: in particular, adult birds are hunted by foxes and martens, and chicks become prey to crows and even hedgehogs. During the nesting season, pheasant nests are often flooded by rain and floods.

The common pheasant is a very cautious and timid bird. It tries to escape at the first opportunity. It runs and jumps very well. It is considered one of the best jumpers of the chicken family. At the same time, the pheasant does not fly very well. It can fly 70-150 meters, but quickly gets exhausted. Therefore, it tries not to fly often.
