EPISODE 5 — AFTER OPENING

⚠️ Part 5 and the final episode of the Breakoff Series.

This is something a lot of people don’t think about — or forget about — when it comes to breakoffs.

Breakoff doesn’t end when your parachute opens.

One of the safest things you can do after deployment is simple:

Keep flying in the same direction you were tracking.

A common mistake is opening and immediately turning back toward the drop zone.

When we track, we sometimes end up slightly up jump run but adjacent to it, depending on the dive flow and the line we took.

And remember — there are still groups exiting behind you.

If you instantly turn back, you risk flying underneath the next groups, especially belly groups that drift more in freefall.
That’s where a lot of close calls happen.

Instead:

➡️ Open
➡️ Check canopy
➡️ Fly straight
➡️ Scan around you

Once you see the groups behind you opening and the airspace is clear, then start working your way back with smooth, predictable turns.

Breakoff safety continues all the way to the ground.

Today we’re talking about something that quietly prevents a lot of close calls:

Predictability.

Breakoff isn’t just about speed or distance —
it’s about being readable to the people around you.

Sudden turns.
Abrupt pitch changes.
Flattening out, then diving again.
Random direction changes.

All of those make it harder for others to understand where you’re going — and that’s where problems start.

Instead, think:

➡️ smooth
➡️ gradual
➡️ intentional

Pick your line.
Commit to it.
Hold it.

And if you need to adjust, do it slowly and predictably — not with big, sudden inputs.

Everyone around you is making decisions based on what they think you’re about to do.

Predictable movement gives everyone time, space, and margin.

Breakoff isn’t about being aggressive —
it’s about being smooth, readable, and safe.

Today’s reminder is simple:

Track. For. Your. Life.

The whole purpose of breakoff is to create as much horizontal separation as possible so we have clean, safe airspace to open our parachutes.

But one of the biggest mistakes we see is jumpers doing a short or lazy track… and then stopping to “wait” for their ditter.

Short tracks = less separation.

Less separation = less margin when things don’t go as planned.

Breakoff is not:

❌ track a little

❌ coast

❌ wait to pull

Breakoff is:

✔ strong body position

✔ committed drive

✔ staying on heading

✔ tracking all the way until the ditter

And when you stop early, you’re not just reducing your own separation — you can also become unpredictable to the people behind you, increasing the risk of being hit from behind.

Go the distance.

Stay engaged.

Create space.

Because breakoff isn’t time to relax —

it’s one of the most important parts of the skydive.
