JUBA - Japan has pledged $2.2 million to support the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in clearing landmines and explosive hazards across South Sudan.
The 18-month project, channelled through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to strengthen national mine action efforts at a time when slightly over 20 square kilometres of land remains contaminated.
Japanese Ambassador Toshio Odagiri said more than 1.2 million unexploded ordnances have already been destroyed, 1,300 square kilometres of land released, and over 4,000 kilometres of road cleared. He said the new funding will help transform unsafe land into productive use while strengthening the National Mine Action Authority.
The Authority’s Chairperson, Jurkuch Barach Jurkuch, praised Japan for its support, noting that contaminated land has dropped from more than 400 square kilometres in 2011 to just 20 today. But he warned that residual mines will continue to pose threats for decades, stressing the need to build lasting national capacity.
According to UNMAS, children account for more than 80% of explosive ordnance casualties in South Sudan over the past five years.
