SLP Launches Nationwide Operation to Crack Down on Unauthorised Vehicle Lights

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has commenced a nationwide operation targeting unauthorised and distracting lighting systems installed on vehicles across the country.

Speaking exclusively to SLP Online Television, Commissioner Abdul Moijueh, Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, said the operation is intended to address the increasing use of coloured LED lights, flashing lights, excessively bright headlights and other decorative lighting fitted to vehicles.

Commissioner Moijueh warned that such lights can distract or temporarily blind other road users, especially at night, increasing the likelihood of road traffic crashes and putting motorists, pedestrians and other members of the public at risk.

The Police said the operation is being carried out in accordance with Sections 58 (1), (2), (3), (14) and (16) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2011.

Vehicle owners and drivers are therefore urged to:

Ensure their vehicles are fitted only with standard manufacturer-approved lighting systems and other lights permitted by law.

Avoid the use of flashing, revolving or excessively bright lights, except where such lights are legally authorised for emergency or security vehicles.

Immediately remove unauthorised coloured, decorative and distracting lights from their vehicles.

The SLP has urged motorists and vehicle owners to take the directive seriously, warning that failure to comply could result in enforcement action.

The Police, working alongside the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, are intensifying efforts to improve road safety and protect all categories of road users nationwide.

The SLP is calling on the public to cooperate with the operation and help make Sierra Leone’s roads safer for everyone.
