The Unique Planners Organize First-Ever Student Leadership Seminar.

The Unique Planners, a group of four finalists: Isatu Jalloh, Isatu Sankoh, Mariam B. Kargbo and Mohamed Chernor Kamara in the Mass Communication and Public Relations Department, have organized a student-leadership centered seminar for class representatives on 22nd May 2024 at Central University’s Students’ Lounge on the theme ‘Enhancing the leadership skills of young leaders.’

The program is a practical of a module titled Event Planning and Management which is read in the final year of pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Hons.) in Mass Communication, and it is a module that imbibes the nitty-gritties of today’s job hunt. This module, as many others, is the miracle fruit of the discipline that sweetens all of the walk-along reads.

The seminar garnered the consent and presence of calibers of personalities and ranges of students across all levels and programs within the University. The seminar distinctly targeted class representatives of level 100 across all programs with the aim of equipping these freshmen spearheads with the nuggets of wisdom to sail through the stormy enigma of student leadership in the University.

The event was climaxed by the experience-filled and invaluable speech made by the esteemed Registrar of the University, Mr. Maligie Sesay who stood-in for the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University, Professor Bob Karankay Conteh. Mr. Sesay beamed light on the ethics of leadership in academic institutions in an overview and underscored the importance of ethical leadership, explaining its importance, core principles and theories relevant to leadership. He further aided the attendees with decision making frameworks, guides to promoting ethical student-leadership lifestyle and policies that mitigate the occurrence of unwelcomed errors in student leadership. Mr. Sesay however highlighted the ethical challenges in academic leadership and encouraged attendees to strive for the extinction of such occurrences as they are being refined by the University for World benefits. He commended the department of Mass Communication and Public Relation for such huge input that they are making as the University’s eye.

The Chief Librarian and Head of Scholarly Research, Mr. Alhaji Bundu Koroma, a seasoned communicator and scholar, lectured the attendees the importance and beauty of using communication skills to enhance leadership skills. He exemplified the power of having the ability of persuasive oration and effective communication as the safest background for praiseworthy leadership. He implored members of the University community to nourish the tripod on which leadership stands: Honesty, Authenticity and Approachability. He descended the podium with energizers to student-leaders to develop the rubrics that enhance and make good communications and communicators respectively.

As a norm, the first gentleman of the students’ body, H.E. Henry Bobson Sesay re-emphasized the speeches of his predecessors to the podium and he schooled the class representatives on the significance of their stance in the continued success of the University’s Students’ Union Government. "Akin to liaisons, your roles cannot be downplayed", Sesay heightened his speech, regarding first year class representatives as demi Ministers and Ambassadors of the SUG and their respective classes.

The event was rounded off with gratitude from various speakers, keenly the event planners.
The seminar served as an illumination to emerging lead students as a plethora of aspects in modern student leadership were demystified.
