The Sharkies had our Sabre Shark Parent-Child Lake Clean-Up yesterday. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the launch was rather delayed but we were extremely thankful for the patience and understanding of those who joined us. As a Scout honour, we promise that we will do better the next time.

We were thrilled to have Kayler, one of the West Area cubs, who stepped up courageously in assisting with the Project Blue Wave briefing. Other than attending our sessions, we hope that our participants can share their knowledge and experience with others, to encourage them to do their part in marine/ waterways conservation.

Of course, it is also extremely heartening for the Sharkies as our alumni are bringing their families to join us for our activities. What touched us the most was, they showcased the spirit of Scouting and SPSSRSSC (hahaha, do we still remember what this stands for?) by taking so much initiatives to help in the smooth running of the event. Imagine the elation when we heard that they were SP Rovers alumni! The SPSSRSSC blood truly runs deep in us.

Sabre Shark is conducting a Project Blue Wave Ambassador training for kids between 7 to 12 years old on 25 April morning. This collaboration is a first, where Sabre Shark worked with Passion Wave, to adapt the existing adult training materials for kids, with the belief that our kids can also be spokespersons for marine conservation. In line with the educational outcomes of the Scout Youth Programme, we also want to nurture youths who are like Kayler, to be courageous and confident, in spreading the awareness of the causes they believe in.

We had an exciting and energizing morning at our birdwatching session, with an overwhelming turnout! 🌿🐦

After a short briefing by our wonderful and knowledgeable leader, Ms. Iris, on how to observe and identify birds, we set off on our little adventure. To our surprise, the kids were the real stars of the day — their sharp eyes helped us spot so many of our feathered friends!

By the end of the walk, we had identified around 10 different birds and learned to recognize several distinct bird calls. And guess what? Not a single complaint about the heat or the distance we covered — we were far too focused on the thrill of the hunt!

Here are some of the birds we spotted:
✨ Hornbill
✨ Bulbuls
✨ Water hen
✨ Sunbirds
✨ Oriole
✨ Heron
✨ Egret
✨ And possibly a Woodpecker and Kingfisher!

A morning well spent in nature, filled with curiosity, teamwork, and discovery. Can’t wait for the next one! 🌳💚

The Sharkies held our 3rd Lake Clean Up at Jurong Lake PAssion WaVe on 6 Sept. Not having too high an expectation but 15 pax (5 families) turned up which really took us by surprise. These families were one of the most enthusiastic groups we have hosted and it was definitely a joy to have them.

Hearing how the parents educate their kids about eco-stewardship while picking the litters was extremely heartening. One of the boys exclaimed, "Oh my gosh", when he saw the amount of litter we picked. We explained that is the rightful reaction and not be too happy having picked full pails of trash. Only when we cannot pick up any rubbish that we know people are taking ownership of their wastes.

We had to also urge them to move from point to point, for they were working really hard to retrieve the trash.

If you are keen to do kayak clean up, do check out PAssion WaVe's social media pages. Do join PAssion WaVe @ JLG for their International Coastal Clean Up on 20 Sept (https://www.onepa.gov.sg/events/kayak-n-klean-x-world-cleanup-day-2025-11506784)

Sabre Shark sent a team to participate in the West Area Cub Scout Exploration Competition held at Jurong Lake Gardens PAssion WaVe, the home ground of the Sharkies. This team was formed from a group of boys who attended our Map Reading activity in July.

A total of 21 teams participated in the competition. The teams were expected to locate as many checkpoints as they can, using alphanumeric MGR, within 1.5hrs and complete a mission at each checkpoint.

The boys achieved an amazing feat (working together for the first time and most of them, meeting each other for the 2nd time), clinching one of the 3 Silver awards.

Our leaders were amazed with the boys' abilities to devise the strategies on their own (they held their own meeting to discuss) and discipline to see through their plan. Despite running from checkpoint to checkpoint for more than an hour, they remained cheerful and enthusiastic.

We also want to do a shoutout to the parents of the boys for being so supportive of the boys' participation.

This experience indeed brought immense encouragement to the Sabre Shark team to continue putting our best foot forward in educating our young through Scouting!

*In Loving Memory of Maj. Tan Hua Chiow*

SP Rovers grieve deeply the loss of our forefather, Maj. Tan Hua Chiow, whose legacy stands tall in the heart of Scouting.
A Scout not just in name but in spirit, he embodied the very essence of leadership, integrity, and service. Though sorrow grips us in his passing, we find comfort in the brilliance of the trail he blazed.

*A Life that Lit the Way*

Maj. Tan was more than a leader, he was a beacon. Through decades of tireless mentorship, he uplifted generations with wisdom, warmth, and unwavering commitment. His presence in our community wasn’t simply instructive; it was transformative. He didn’t just teach; he inspired.

*Grief with Gratitude*

As we mourn, we celebrate. We honor not just the life he lived, but the values he instilled in each of us. Maj. Tan showed us how to lead with heart, serve with purpose, and live with honor.

Let us carry his spirit onward, through every good turn, every knot tied with care, and every promise we make as Scouts to leave the world better than we found it.

Thank you, Maj. Tan. You were our North Star.

Project Blue WaVe Ambassador Training

Sabre Shark Community Sea Scouts Unit had our first Project Blue WaVe training that was conducted by PAssion Wave JLG. We were joined by West and South Area leaders and youths.

In the theory session, we learnt about ISO (interconnection, sustainability, ownership) - how our actions can impact the environment and what we can do to make the world a better place for ourselves and our future generations. The 6Rs also stuck in our mind.

Session 2 was hands-on where we experienced park clean-up and kayak clean up. We were so privileged and grateful to PAssion Wave for the guided, kayak clean up tour around the lake which left all of us in awe.

It has been a well-spent and valuable day, equipping ourselves to be the eco-ambassadors that are so in line with the values and mission of Scouting!

If you are keen to attend the training, please contact Sabre Shark to find out more!

It has indeed been an eventful week for the Sharkies and our hearts are full to be able to be involved in such meaningful work again!
