Here is a translation of the interview and review by the eminent Jonny Nilsson❤️
In a normal music world, Loom should be mentioned alongside other greats from the region, such as The Quill and Mönsterås Bluesband. They are, in fact, on the same high level, but in a different musical landscape. I would argue that they are among the best in their genre, even from a global perspective.
After some 35 years of creative work, Loom is now releasing new music with a new singer. Today, the first song, “The End of a Story II,” was released from the EP the band is putting out this summer.
“Now I’m making the music I truly want to make to the fullest,” says the band’s songwriter and guitarist Fredrik Axelsson when I meet him at Nelsson’s Café in downtown Mönsterås. And the new singer is Fredrik’s own son, Albin Axelsson-Jonsson, who is now making his studio debut.
There’s no doubt that Fredrik is enthusiastic about the new EP, which is set to be released this summer. What’s more, Simon Scott from the classic shoegaze band Slowdive helped master the tracks. Slowdive is, after all, considered one of the three biggest bands in the genre, alongside My Bloody Valentine and Ride. That says something about the respect Loom commands in the industry.
Loom has its roots in the late 1980s, when Fredrik Axelsson began recording music with friends. A couple of years later, Loom was formed. Geographically rooted in the Ålem and Blomstermåla regions, but musically inspired by the British indie scene with bands like The Cure, Joy Division, Slowdive, and the Cocteau Twins—though Loom has always had its own unique sound. They’re not copies of anything else.
On the new songs, Albin Axelsson-Jonsson has taken over the microphone, and his voice undoubtedly fits perfectly into the soundscape Loom creates. The new song (which, admittedly, has been around for many years as a demo) has a fateful yet beautiful atmosphere with dark, mournful undertones, which blends well with the sorrowful lyrics about a girl struggling with immense pain in her life—pain so intense that she seeks liberation.
Of course, it’s not just atmospheric. At its core, there’s a song structure and a lovely melody, but as a listener, I’m completely absorbed by the music, which I feel has grown somewhat heavier over the years. You’re not just listening to a song—you become part of it. Fredrik seems to feel a sense of relief now that the songs are finished, since he gets drawn into the mood of the lyrics when he’s making the music. But for us listeners, that darkness can be something we recognize in ourselves—and which, as a result, offers comfort. You’re not alone. And in these times when the pursuit of happiness is everything, Loom dares to show another side of reality. It’s also a kind of liberation.
The new EP, “And maybe the end is not final,” features four songs that will be released one by one over the summer. I’ve had the chance to sneak a listen and can already promise a truly beautiful collection of songs. There will likely be more later this year. I think I heard something about a vinyl release, too. We’re looking forward to that. But first, let’s enjoy the song that was released today. It showcases a band that’s still incredibly passionate, musically dynamic, and has something to say. For real.
Loom now consists of:
Fredrik Axelsson: music, lyrics, guitar, keyboards.
Roland Klein: music, bass.
Eddie Wilmin: keyboards.
Henrik Viberg: drums.
Albin Axelsson-Jonsson: vocals and guitar.

We released a new song today—a re-recording of our old demo track, "The End of a Story."
We just felt that the song itself was too good to be just a demo.
It’s also the first studio track where Albin handles the vocals🤗
Go check it out, everyone.
