We hear this one a lot. And yes, it is fun. But the flying is maybe the smallest part of the day.

Before anything leaves the ground, there's the boring, important stuff: which regulatory category the operation falls into, a risk assessment for the site, airspace checks, a flight plan built around what the data actually needs. The logbook. The pre-flight checks. The quiet conversation about who's standing where.

Then comes the part that looks like "just flying" which is mostly holding very still while a machine does something precise and slightly nerve-wracking over a live industrial site, and not letting a good shot tempt you into a bad decision.

So: fun? Absolutely. Just not only fun.

📍 Behind every Skyline Drones flight there's a certified remote pilot and the paperwork to back it. That's the difference between footage and an inspection.

Ask three people how much material came out of a pit last month and you'll often get three answers.

A drone survey settles the argument. And it does it with two surfaces that are easy to mix up but do very different jobs.

A Digital Surface Model (DSM) is the honest-but-cluttered one: it captures everything the camera sees: the earth, yes, but also the excavator that didn't move, the stockpiles, the scrub around the rim. A Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is the DSM after a haircut: strip away the machines and vegetation, and you're left with the bare shape of the pit: floor, benches, slopes.

In a quarry you want both. The DSM tells you what's sitting on site right now. The DTM tells you what the pit actually looks like underneath it all.

A thermal scan of a PV field only works when the panels are actually working hard. Faults show up as heat, and heat only appears when there's enough sunlight driving current through the modules. Fly on a low, weak-sun day and a genuine fault can look identical to a healthy panel.

That's why the calendar matters as much as the flight. Above a certain irradiance, the differences are real and readable. Below it, the whole scan loses its meaning which is why the useful window narrows as the year moves toward winter.

Captured in the right conditions, a single flight sorts one problem from another: a lone hot cell, a failed bypass diode, a full string gone offline, or output lost to soiling and shading.

Standing inside a cave, the most important part is the one you can't properly see. The roof sits metres overhead in near-darkness, and it's where the real questions are: where does the rock fracture, which blocks have worked loose, what voids are opening up out of sight.

From the ground, you can only guess at them. So instead of looking up, we fly up below the roof, capturing the surface as overlapping imagery and range data.

Those measurements rebuild the ceiling as a 3D model. In it, every fracture, loose block and cavity sits at a fixed position and depth no longer something you estimate by torchlight, but something you can measure, section and revisit as the cave changes.

Got a cave, mine or underground structure that needs eyes where people can't safely go? Talk to Skyline Drones about an inspection.

Search and rescue operations have one variable that doesn't negotiate: time.

A forest is at least 4 square kilometers. One platform sweeps it in a certain number of minutes. Two platforms running the same preloaded map, split across the same grid, sweep it in half that time. The math is simple. Getting two platforms to hold accurate position under dense canopy without GPS is less so.

True North runs on both. One map, two searchers, zero satellite dependency. When the thermal camera on the second platform picks up the hit, the coordinates are already accurate to under 5 meters, because the navigation that put the platform there didn't rely on a signal the canopy was blocking anyway.

The rescue team gets coordinates they can act on, faster than one platform could have found them alone.

The source is somewhere inside the unit. Ground crews can't enter to find it.

The drone maps the plume from above, concentric passes, live VOC and H₂S readings, concentration gradient pointing directly at the source. By the time the flight ends, the location is georeferenced and the values are measured. No entry into the hazard zone and without to shutdown.

If you run scheduled leak detection or you're dealing with an active event tell us the site type and we'll outline what a survey looks like in your context.

200 meters is not a lot of space between a squad and what they haven't seen yet.

The platform holds that gap. It stays ahead of the advance, reads the ground before the squad reaches it movement, vehicles, geometry that turns into an ambush if nobody calls it out in time. When contact appears, the callout happens. When contact moves, the platform tracks it. The squad adjusts without breaking stride.

What makes it work in a contested environment is what it doesn't do. True North keeps it on station through a preloaded map, no satellite, no uplink, no position broadcast. The threat has nothing to intercept because nothing was ever sent.

The squad gets eyes they don't have to carry and a signal nobody can find.

A volatile gas survey doesn't end with "there's a leak somewhere in this area."

The concentration map shows exactly where: cell-averaged PPM values across the surveyed zone, source localised to coordinates. The emission dataset plots TVOC readings against the regulatory limit across the full flight, every spike timestamped and georeferenced.

The difference between knowing gas is present and knowing where it's coming from, at what concentration, and whether it crosses the threshold and that's the difference between a concern and a decision.

The output of a survey is data you can act on.

If you're managing a site where volatile emissions are a compliance requirement or an operational risk tell us what you're working with.
We'll tell you what a survey looks like in your specific context.

The mission called for night survey of a defended area. The platform had one constraint that mattered more than any other: it could not be detected.

It launched low, under the radar horizon, and stayed there while it covered the approach. When the terrain offered shadow, it moved into it. When the vantage point required altitude, it climbed. Nobody told it when to do any of that. It decided, based on what the preloaded map said about the terrain and what the onboard sensors confirmed in real time.

The platform made every navigation and routing decision itself, using True North our module that runs on the existing camera and a preloaded map, without uplink, without operator guidance, without broadcasting its position to anyone.

The survey completed. The area never knew it had been surveyed.
